Publisher's Summary

An inspiring and powerful memoir of surviving the Jonestown massacre and becoming a fearless voice against injustice and inequality by California congresswoman Jackie Speier.

Jackie Speier was twenty-eight when she joined Congressman Leo Ryan’s delegation to rescue defectors from cult leader Jim Jones’s Peoples Temple in Jonestown, Guyana. Ryan was killed on the airstrip tarmac. Jackie was shot five times at point-blank range. While recovering from what would become one of the most harrowing tragedies in recent history, Jackie had to choose: Would she become a victim or a fighter? The choice to survive against unfathomable odds empowered her with a resolve to become a vocal proponent for human rights.

From the formative nightmare that radically molded her perspective and instincts to the devastating personal and professional challenges that would follow, Undaunted reveals the perseverance of a determined force in American politics. Deeply rooted in Jackie’s experiences as a widow, a mother, a congresswoman, and a fighter, hers is a story of true resilience, one that will inspire other women to draw strength from adversity in order to do what is right - no matter the challenges ahead.

A must read

What an amazing life Jacquie has had, the strength to continue when difficult situations arose. The injuries from Jonestown would have been enough for some to give up. Loved this book.

loved it

Being born in '84 I had never heard of Jonestown. Jackie's life is really quite remarkable and how the tragedies of her life play out in such a way that it almost feels like Divine intervention. I have immense respect for her after reading this. It was fun to hear her voice but she is not the most fluid narrator. But I found it easy to follow and listen to.

Outstanding

I’m blown away by Jackie’s courage and grit. She has become one of my heroes! I can’t help but think how much better our country would be with her as President.

Incredibly Inspiring

I was vaguely aware of the Jonestown horror story but not until I heard this book by Congresswoman Jackie Speier did I understand what happened there. Ms. Speier never wallows in self-pity, nor does she indicate the many challenges and struggles she encountered in her life were simply and easily met and overcome. She presents her story in a compelling and inspiring way.
I plan to listen to this book again - there's no doubt it will move me even more!

Recommended to me

I just sent a Thank you note to the person who recommended this book to me. I listened to the entire book during my drive down to Philly.

This book kept me riveted and before I knew it, my drive was over! What an amazing woman. I can't believe how much she has endured during her life. I also can't believe I hadn't known any of her story before. She has endured so much.

I plan to follow her career from now on!

I especially enjoyed the fact that the author read her book. She read the book. She did not perform her book, and I appreciated that.

Interesting, but too political towards the end.

I liked it and was very interested until about the 9th chapter when it got way too political and I had to stop listening.

Personal yet Political

I loved hearing Jackie's personal story much more than her political one. Great job Jackie

Fascinating Look Into Not-Too-Distant History

Jackie Speier was one of the few survivors of the Jonestown Massacre. And instead of opting for a more quiet life, she opted to continue to serve our country in Congress. Her Story shows victories and setbacks - it is real - it is relatable. It is a very good read.

Not what I expected

Maybe a chapter was dedicated to the Jonestown story - the rest was a typical autobiography.

thank you for sharing this story. I was not aware of the struggle of trying to get something passed in Congress.
