About this listen

Opening in 1937 in Oklahoma, Unbroken Hope tells the story of Erma and her daughter Barbara, who journey westward in search of a new life, driven by the hope of escape from a world broken by dust, hunger, and shattered dreams. Erma, bringing her young daughter, tries to track down her man, Clay, who has left her behind and is traveling to California. Erma fights her way to California. Destitute, she clings to the kindness and love of the farm owners and with grit she keeps moving forward.

As Europe stumbles toward war, Erma meets Vince. They fall in love and are married on the eve of the United States entering the war. Vince goes off to fight, leaving Erma and Barbara to wonder about his fate.

Despite these trials, Barbara’s heart remains strong, and she learns the vital lesson of survival: keep going, even when the world is indifferent.
