About this listen

Nineteen-year-old Nessa Thorne expects death when she volunteers for Empire's selection. Instead, she's thrust into Confluence Academy, where students harness elemental magic and bond powerful beasts—from wolves to ancient dragons—forging themselves into the Empire's most lethal weapons.

Students are branded by affinity: water, air, earth, or fire. But Nessa's mark is different. A silver spiral—the mark of an unbound. It's a power so dangerous her kind were hunted to extinction centuries ago—or so the Empire claims.

To survive, she must hide what she is in a castle that reeks of blood, where students kill each other for advantage, and failing to tether an elemental means death.

Nessa's greatest threat may be the only other volunteer—Raith Hollow, a powerful fire affinity whose scorching gaze follows her every move and whose secrets could topple kingdoms.

Alliances are forged in blood, enemies circle like vultures, and forbidden desires close in. Death once seemed like a release from her tragic past. Now it's not an option. She'll embrace her terrible potential or watch everything she's fought for burn.

At Confluence Academy, students leave as weapons... or they don't leave at all.

A delicious slow-burning romance as dangerous as the magic? Check. A final line that will haunt you for weeks? Double check. An ending that will leave you desperate for book two? Absolutely.

Story seems to be taking a lot of its plot line from other popular contemporary fantasy romance books. Getting tired of Rachel Leblang narration sounding like she has a mouthful of marbles when attempting to narrate the male characters - very tiring listening to her - WHERE IS ANTHONY PALMINI? I'm half way through the book and he nowhere to be heard. Probably will end up as a DNF title because of the lack of male narration.

Missing Anthony Palmini

Definitely saw the ending coming and could see who all the characters were going to be. But I still enjoyed the journey. I wish the female lead was stronger in all aspects as the story progressed, lets hope the next book shows her become something beyond. looking forward to the next book.

Very enjoyable

I had been hanging to read this book and it was not what I expected, it was better. The world and story were amazing, Raith was not what I expected and feel like I was thrown for a loop. I'm so keen for the next book

It took up until chapter's 40 & 42 for Anthony Palmini to start narrating & it was so disappointing only having him narrate two chapter, if a book is going to be narrated by 2 narrators please do it as a Duet, it was so painful to listen to the female narrator try & do both male & female parts this would have been better as either a Duet, full cast or dramatic adaptation but the way it was done was terrible, the story itself was enjoyable just not the narration

Disappointing Narration

Unfortunately, I found the quality of the narration quite distracting. The female narrator’s delivery often sounded as though she was speaking with something in her mouth, resulting in a muffled and inconsistent tone. This made the audiobook difficult to listen to, and I eventually chose to stop and read the physical book instead.

While the story itself was enjoyable, the audiobook did not meet expectations and felt like a poor investment based on the narration quality alone.

The female narrator is boring
