Der Aufsatz sollte bereits 1757 erscheinen, wurde aber von Hume selbst zurückgezogen, so wie er es zur gleichen Zeit auch mit seiner Abhandlung "Über Selbstmord" tat. Die Veröffentlichung beider Schriften erfolgte erst nach seinem Tod 1777.
Seine religionskritische und aufklärerische Darstellung scheidet philosophisch zulässige Argumente von anerzogenen, aber unhaltbaren Behauptungen. Damit liegt hier eine kurzgefasste philosophische und im Grunde bereits entwicklungsbiologische Kritik an Metaphysik, Religion und Aberglauben vor, die den Unsterblichkeitsgedanken ad absurdum führt.(p) und (c) 2007 RioloMedia
