Summary

Selected as one of Audible’s best audiobooks of 2021.

Judith Lucy was just GREAT!

Sure, the last remaining member of her immediate family had died, she was menopausal, she suspected her career was in the shitter and it seemed like the world was going to hell in a handbasket – but she was about to move in with the love of her life! Everything would work out because SHE HAD A MAN.

Then, in the space of twenty-four hours, her relationship came apart and so did she. A broken heart became the catalyst for a complete existential melt down. She was nearly fifty, suddenly alone and unsure about every aspect of her life.

How had this happened? Should she blame one of her four parents? What part had the comedy world played and was her disastrous history with men about more than just bad taste?

In her most candid and insightful book yet, Judith figures out what went wrong and then turns her attention to finding out what her life might look like if it went right. She tries everything from dating a tree to getting a portrait of her vulva done to swimming with a whale shark. Thanks to a series of revelations and a slight drowning experience, Judith slowly starts to realise that her life is still full of possibilities and despite death, heartache and a dry vagina it turns out … she’s fine.

Critic Reviews

‘… shot through with her trademark wit … but it’s also poignant, meditative and thoughtful in the way she navigates her way towards a new life’
‘… Lucy at her self-deprecating best’
‘… the epitome of her work. It’s absolutely wet-your-pants funny as well as gritty and admirably authentic … a candid, powerful and truly outstanding book. A fantastic read in present times, it truly is a most enthralling read.’
Turns Out, I'm Fine is poignant, deep and meaningful, while packing punchlines and sardonic asides like sardines.’
‘Award-winning comedian Judith Lucy produces a sincere and forthright memoir … Not one for those who are easily offended, Lucy’s writing mirrors her performance: confronting at times, but straightforward – with copious use of expletives, but always sardonic and amusing.’
‘This book felt so real and honest – it made me feel like Lucy was the cool, childfree aunt that would tell you the truth. Even if it hurts, no sugarcoating.’

Not since Eddie Murphy's 'Delirious' has there been a comedian that delivers non-stop gold from start to finish. I've always been a fan of Judith but this is the best material ever.
Thank you Judith for baring your soul, you are the best of the best!

Well, its safe to say this wouldn’t have been quite the same to listen to if she hadn’t of narrated it so effortlessly.. its like being a her gig with only your ears?

She really makes some crushingly hilarious observations on the state of womanhood 40+ and i can’t say that sounds fun... but i am looking forward to wearing brightly coloured eyewear and outfits so people notice i exist in my 50s . Haha.

Towards the end it takes a deep turn into the meaning of life and finding purpose, but explored in a very Judith Lucy way. It made me want to go swim with whales....

(Also i think is at its best if you’ve seen her last few shows for context of some of the events she talks about.)

Profound comedy and plenty of LOLs
