In an instant, everything stops. No lights. No phones. No transportation.

When coordinated EMP and Cyber attacks wipe out the nation’s power grid and communications, ultra-marathon runner, Maddie Langston, is forced to run for her life.

Stranded in a Chicago airport when the lights go out, Maddie is in a race against time. According to her father, she doesn’t have long before the city descends into chaos. She must leave the airport before it is too late.

Although she knows she must flee the Windy City, Maddie’s first battle is to overcome her fear of the violence she knows is coming. She’s a fighter; she just doesn’t know it yet.

The perilous journey out of the city becomes even more difficult when Maddie takes responsibility for an orphaned 10-year-old girl. Together, as chaos fills the streets, they must fight to survive in a turbulent new world.

Kevin Pierce delivers! The story? Not so much.

I listen to a lot of EOTWAWKI books and I happy to get an opportunity to listen to another narrated by Kevin Pierce.

Turbulent had some promise and if all of the other reviews are to be believed, I'm of a minority, but overall the story fell flat for me. Maybe some of this had to do with how compact the book is - a lot was squeezed into a 6 hour listen and this left no room for decent story/character development. It's hard to give examples without spoilers but there were major items completely glossed over. Also many decisions and/or directions that didn't make a whole lot of sense, or were confusing; one minute we're in a city, next thing I know we're on a farm, stuff like that. Things that could have easily been flushed out with a little effort making a more enjoyable listen.

I will still likely pick up book 2 because I do like the genre and maybe Mr Payne is more skilled at the "living in the post-era" stuff vs the "post event escape" stuff, who knows? And it's at least read by Kevin Pierce who has become one of a small handful who can claim the title of "narration-extraorinaire of the post-apocolyptic genre" IMO!

End of the world as we know it!

Turbulent, the first book in TL Payne's Days of Want series, is a wild and often brutal adventure. The adventure starts when America is hit by a devastating cyber/EMP attack, and Turbulent hits all the beats you expect from a good apocalyptic thriller: great characters, a collapsing society, and a harrowing tale off survival. Like many books in the genre, the story is told from various perspectives. While it mostly from the perspective of a single family all currently separated from each other. The mother is in an area that still has power but had no way of getting to her children, a son who is off on a school trip and and a daughter who is flying home. We also get a bit of the story told from another pair of siblings-brothers/thugs, one of who is a drug addict. In addition we also get a look at the bigger picture with short chapters that offer us a glimpse at the surviving government...and let me say that things aren't running smoothly. The story is action packed and at times fairly brutal. Society definitely crumbles quickly. I enjoyed this story quite a bit and am quite interested in seeing what comes next...especially in terms of the bigger picture. Will outside forces invade and take advantage of the chaos?

Kevin Pierce is definitely one of the best narrators out there and I've come to consider him THE voice in post apocalyptic survival fiction.

I hope I'm that girl!

Loved it! The attraction of Apocalypse stories for me are psychology shift and the new world view. T.L. Payne nails it! My only complaint is that it's so short. Great narrator too! His mature rasp gives us the facts without any overplayed drama, and at the same time allows hope. Beautiful world building and character building that is believable and flawed, which makes us comfortable even when the world is scary and out of control. Great Read!!

Incomplete story ends in a cliffhanger

This story fits the formula for dystopian fiction, including the cliffhanger ending. Kevin Pierce performs as expected, but I simply cannot evaluate an unfinished story.

Nice story for this genre

I have a pretty broad palette for the post-apocalyptic/dystopian genre. I've hit this genre from all possible angles many good, a few not so good and this story definitely doesn't disappoint. While the EMP sub-theme isn't a new idea, it's definitely one that hasn't been over-written about, at least in my experience.

I WILL say that the nature of preparedness of Maddie and her brother seems a bit fanciful or far fetched. My ability to suspend disbelief is stretched pretty quickly. But then you realize ok, fine, she's a marathon runner...and yeah, ok....their dad was a doomsday prepper so that COULD happen, them equipped with Go-Bags and runners food/drink. I cringed a little initially at how neat and convenient that was at the beginning but powered through to see where this would take us.

Maddie's in an airport in heavily populated Chicago and her brother is coming back from a field trip in Illinois on a school bus. Their mom is in San Diego caring for her ailing mother on hospice care. Uncle Ryan who's also a prepper is some hundred miles from Maddie presumably hunkered down during the chaos. They must get to him. Maddie begins her journey with a uppity unprepared family from the airport in tow.

The rest of the story flip flops - sometimes a little too rapidly for my ability to follow every sub-plot - between Maddie and her 10yr old companion, the brother, the mother, FEMA representatives and two degenerate junkie brothers set on using the catastrophe to their advantage.

A few details of the book went too quickly for my taste, and we jumped around a lot but for a 6hr book, you really gotta be fast paced with everything. I really liked how the author used a different writing style for Maddie with the family, the brother in his predicaments and the junkie brothers. The language was adjusted appropriately for each sub-plot. Gritty R-rated details with the junkies, subdued yet also gritty details with Maddie and the family, and so on. You're not going to be all gore and f-bombs with a 10yr old girl and you certainly can't sugar coat the true nature of the junkie and his deplorable plans.

Everyone keeps raving about Kevin Pierce and apparently I've been missing out. Despite my frequent dabbling in this genre I haven't heard much if anything else with him as a narrator. He's definitely got a nice voice for the genre.

All in all decent post apocalyptic thriller. I liked the cliff-hanging at the end to keep you invested in reading/listening to the next novel in the series. You just know things aren't wrapped up neat and tidy. You gotta hear what happened to the brother on his journey. You gotta assume people will find them...and not good people....you gotta see where the mom's story leads. How does the rest of the USA devolve? Its only been like 4 or 5 days since the event right?

Give a listen...

Overall, I would recommend this title

Just to keep everyone on the same page: I requested a free reviewer's copy from the author in exchange for an unbiased and honest review. There were no strings attached because they don't even require you to write a review, but that is what they are really hoping for. It isn't about getting good reviews, but honest ones that will help potential listeners/readers to decide if a title feels right for themselves. Reviews have helped me to find some of my favorite books, so I am excited to help others along that path while also enjoying some great listens.

I genuinely enjoyed this title and I especially thought the narrator was pleasant to listen to. I work long hours and I love audiobooks because I can still consume new stories while also getting work done, so it is important to me to have a pleasant listen. I enjoyed the storyline and the characters. It boils down to a survival novel that takes place during a time of great strife and turmoil. It is what may be called post-apocalyptic in some circles, but it is not cookie-cutter. I felt that the majority of them were fairly well developed and natural. The dialog could be choppy at times, but overall it worked for those characters in the situation.

I did have a little bit of trouble in the very beginning because because the main characters seemed to cotton on to what was happening way fasted than might be possible, even given their backgrounds and history. They essentially jump straight to a far-fetched conclusion that they never question and turns out to be totally correct. The characters also are way over prepared for this exact situation, which makes some sense when you learn of their history, but gets flimsy when you find that at least one of them thought those things were a total waste of time. It all just seems a little too perfect.

In general it was fun to listen to and I enjoyed getting to know the characters. I did wish it was a little longer and that the author had taken more time to ease into the story. I am looking forward to the next in the series.

A cynical survival story

This story begins with the daughter of an ex-military prepper trapped in an airport after power goes out. She immediately escapes from the airport and begins her journey cross country to reunite with her family. The other side of the story is her younger brother who is a prepper like his father. He is on a school trip when the power goes out. Both have learned some skills from their father but they are not prepared for the situations they are thrown into. The situations they find themselves in are different and challenging in their own ways. I think the author was being overly cynacil with how things played out though. While yes the situation can easily turned bad and it's best to prepare for the worst what happened to these two leaned heavily towards the side of everything going wrong. There doesn't seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel that they are working towards just more bad to come.

The narration for the book wasn't bad but it wasn't anything that really stood out to me either.

This book was provided to me for free in exchange for an impartial review.

Just as good read the second time

I read this book not long ago and was offered a free audio version, I accepted the offer to refresh my memory and because Kevin Pierce is one of my favorite narrators. As usual he gave an amazing read. This is a fast moving PA story with likeable characters. I enjoyed that the weapons & ammo was not described with overkill. I'm going to jump into book 2 immediately. I highly recommend this book to people who enjoy believable PA stories.

A lot of potential

I requested a copy of this book to review. The setting is quite unique, the story interesting, and the narrator is good. You follow a family whose two children are traveling in different cities at the start of the book and who have to try and make their way home against the odds. My criticism would be that the end of the world felt rather rushed. This could partiality be due to the fact that this is the first book in a new series, but there were a lot of things happening that the author just seemed to consider normal with no need to explain. People immediately descended to looting and killing within hours of the power going out with no apparently reason. The main characters were also not only fully prepared for the end of the world but recognized the signs for this precise scenario. However, I did enjoy it and would like to continue the series to see where it leads as it has a lot of potential.

A pure fight for survival

Firstly I would like to say that I was initially drawn to the book by its cover . Its impactful and eye catching and intrigued me immensely. I loved the character of Maddie for her strength, determination and resourcefulness. For once a relatable female character that has the primal instinct to just survive. It is worrying that with the position the world is currently in with political unrest such an occurrence could happen in reality. It makes the reader evaluate whether they are prepared for such an eventuality. i was given this book by the author/narrator in return for an honest and unbiased review

I'm Hooked, A Great Apocalypse Story.

What would people do if the unthinkable happened? That’s what TL Payne tries to answer with this book about an EMP attack over the United States. Unlike a lot of apocalypse stories that focus on one character, or one group, this one covers many people in different situations including those in authority. I enjoyed this take on things and it was interesting to see how their decisions affected people ‘on the street’. Things deteriorate very quickly for those people ‘on the street’ and we follow Maddie as she tries to find her way back to her family. The bad guys seem to arrive en masse testing the training Maddie has been given by her late father who was a ‘prepper’. He was certain something like this would happen one day and taught his children to be ready. This is a very clever way for the author to give the character the required skills for surviving without it being by pure luck. Things certainly don’t always go well for her but I won't elaborate on that for fear of spoiling the story. As the first part of a series there are some hints that there is more to learn about what has happened. There’s no jarring cliffhanger at the end though which I was grateful for. I’m hooked and I will definitely be reading Hunted, book two of the series, very soon.
Kevin Pierces narration is wonderful his deep rich voice adds weight to the story. He brings the characters to life with seeming effortless ease as if he’s chatting away to close friends. He conveys the tension the characters experience very well, bringing the story to life. Great story and a first class narration.
