Aginolf, ohnehin voller Wut auf die Menschen, nimmt bittere Rache. Er verzaubert Fabian und entführt das Kind in die unsichtbare Welt der Trolle und Elfen. Dort freundet sich Fabian mit dem kleinen Troll Baldemar an. Von einer Roggenmuhme erfahren sie, dass sie drei Aufgaben lösen müssen, um Aginolfs Zauber zu brechen.
Eine lange, gefährliche Reise von Schweden durch Deutschland bis nach Italien beginnt, bei der sich ihnen weitere abenteuerlustige Gesellen anschließen. Bei all dem spielt Fabians Oma Malette eine wichtige Rolle, denn die war früher Elfe, hat aber weltlich geheiratet.
