Publisher's Summary

Druid Atticus O'Sullivan hasn't stayed alive for more than two millennia without a fair bit of Celtic cunning. So when vengeful thunder gods come Norse by Southwest looking for payback, Atticus, with a little help from the Navajo trickster god Coyote, lets them think that they've chopped up his body in the Arizona desert. But the mischievous Coyote is not above a little sleight of paw, and Atticus soon finds that he's been duped into battling bloodthirsty desert shapeshifters called skinwalkers. Just when the Druid thinks he's got a handle on all the duplicity, betrayal comes from an unlikely source. If Atticus survives this time, he vows he won't be fooled again. Famous last words.

This is audiobook four of the Iron Druid Chronicles series. If you would like to hear more, you will find the first chapter of book five - Trapped - at the end of this recording.

Great after a slow start

Big fan of the series! This one is probably the least a favourite of them. There was a bit of a lull after the opening chapter, but then the story really picks up again later in the book.

I look forward to reading/listening to the next one.

Good listen

I like this series, just wish the narrator would get the Irish pronunciation correct as a fluent speaker I strain to understand and cringe at the leprechaun imitations and lovely as he is I wish the bloody dog would shut up, it begins to seriously detract from the story, maybe it would be better if read but the "Barney the dinosaur with a speech impediment" voice drives me nuts. That said, it's generally a well spun tale and always enjoyable. Worth a listen to fill the Dresden shaped hole in recent releases !

Not narrated by Luke Daniels!

Would you consider the audio edition of Tricked to be better than the print version?

I think both have equal strengths.

What did you like best about this story?

The beginning romance between Atticus and Granuaille. Plus Coyote's antics.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

I found it hard to judge, after buying the first three books narrated by Luke Daniels a few years ago. While I think Chris' narration is probably very good, in my opinion Luke's is superior.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The vampire battle.

Any additional comments?

As I stated above, if you already own 1-3 from their previous incarnation be prepared for an adjustment period.

Another Iron Druid installment

Any additional comments?

Review:
The openning gambit ushers the reader with Coyote in the central stage. Pairing "Coyote" and the title "Tricked" gave me a pretty good idea of what this story is gonna be... and I was right, giving an element of predictability in the book which I did not notice in previous books. Another thing new about this book is that I struggled to get through the first few chapters. I've had this book since it was published but I couldn't seem to get through it! I keep putting it down. Which is surprising because Kevin Hearne's story telling quality has always been compelling to me... except the first half of this book. So in the end I bought the audiobook version and I finally finished the book. However I found that once past the halfway mark, the story flowed in an even tempo and it was easy going until the end. It was just the first half that was hard work, but I persevered because I know that this author delivers. And, because I am an old fan of this series and I wanted to read the rest of the The Iron Druid books, and to understand the rest of the books I must read this book too. So that contributed to my persistence. Which paid off because Kevin Hearne did deliver in the end!

Empirical Evaluation:
Character Development = 4
World Building = 4.5
Plot = 3
Story = 3
Pace = (10hrs & 34mins listening time)
Ending = 4
Story Telling Quality = 4
Narration = 4

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5

9.9/10

I love this series, hence 5 stars overall and for the story The only reason I’m not giving the narrator 5 stars is because of a few mispronunciations. I don’t know about the names of the Irish gods and characters, but Samhain is pronounced Saar-wen and ichor is eye-cor. Just a couple of picky little examples to make my point. I also think Oberon could sound more manly and gruff rather than ever-so-slightly Scooby-ish. I really love his narration and characterisations otherwise - I’ve even got used to Oberon - and would definitely read other books performed by him.

Fun, un-challenging action romp

I'm not sure I agree with the title. Yes OK so Atticus has to try to figure out the motivation of Coyote (a God known for trickery) but it wasn't really that much of a stretch. Having said that, I didn't get this book for it to be a stretch. It's a fun, easy going fantasy series that only requires half a brain - which is what I want as I'm listening to this on seriously long hikes. I need the other half of my brain for map reading etc and I don't want to be unduly concerned about the plot (i.e. I know it will work out ok in the end and that's fine).

It is nice to hear a bit more character development than in the last couple of books though.There are some genuinely funny jokes and themes running through it; I particularly love the sausage keeping score games between Atticus and his Irish Wolfhound. Nice. If you liked the other books, you'd like this. Actually, if you haven't listened / read the others it would be worth starting at the beginning. Not essential, but you'll get more out of it.

Great story, dodgy dog voice.

I like this series and for the most part I enjoy the narration. Oberon's voice sounds stupid though.

A Non-stop Fight For Survival That Had Me Hooked!

I've become quite a fan of this urban fantasy series and have enjoyed each book to date. I love Kevin Hearne's writing style, finding it: intelligent and well researched but easy to read. His stories are full of threads but never leave me feeling confused, keeping me hooked from beginning to end - Tricked was no exception.

Once again, I downloaded the narration to listen to the story while reading; Christopher Ragland's performance was amazing and transported me feet-first into this adventure. The pace at which he read the story and the emotion he added to the different scenes was perfect. Although his female voices aren't quite as believable as his male ones, ;-) I still loved the accents he crafted for each character - his performance bringing each one to life in my mind.

While I'm talking about the characters, I must say how much I'm loving them all in this series. Every one feels like a complex being in their own right, with their own tales and histories, making them all feel so real and believable. I'm looking forward to getting to know some of the supporting cast in subsequent books. I became invested in the survival of the Navajo construction crew - I cried, laughed and raged with them. But I must say, Oberon, Atticus’ faithful Irish Wolfhound is still the BEST part of the team, he just lights up my heart in every scene he's in with his comments and antics.

I think that the story unfolded at a good pace, never giving us any more information than Atticus had, which meant that we journeyed with him, never really knowing when or where the next attack would strike. I loved the action-packed pace of this book, spending most of my time on the edge of my seat, holding my breath.

Although this is the fourth book in the Iron Druid Chronicles, Kevin Hearne does a great job of weaving in any pertinent information for new readers (or us rather forgetful older readers) into this story without any detrimental effects. There is no perilous life-or-death cliffhanger at the end of this book (woop!woop!) which means that it could be read as a standalone, however, I for one have become emotionally invested and I can’t wait to see what trials and adventures Atticus, Oberon and Granuaile have to face next!
