About this listen

While Captain Aubrey worries about repairs to his ship, Stephen Maturin assumes the centre stage; for the dockyards and salons of Malta are alive with Napoleon's agents, and the admiralty's intelligence network is compromised.

Maturin's cunning is the sole bulwark against sabotage of Aubrey's daring mission. All of Patrick O'Brian's strengths are on parade in this novel of action and intrigue, set partly in Malta, partly in the treacherous, pirate-infested waters of the Red Sea.

I am really enjoying this engaging series with a first rate narration. However, this one is probably my least favourite and I felt a little disappointed when it was finished. Still a great story though.

Another engaging instalment in the Aubrey/Maturin series

I like the way the author takes the reader back in time with his authentic style of writing.

Patrick O’Brian at his best. Sea battles, intrigue, sexual tension unrequited beautifully read by Ric Jerrom with his many voices

Yet another rollicking great yarm

Despite my ongoing enjoyment with this series there were two small downsides to this book. I found the voice that the narrator used for Mrs Fielding a bit laboured, and I found some parts of the plot a little abstruse and sketched over too quickly.

Still fantastic!

Still enjoying this series
