About this listen
It was a day like any other, crystal blue sky and warm summer air, as young Nathan Spiteri walked into a change room at a familiar public swimming pool and would experience a turn of events that would change his innocent life forever. In this powerful, and vulnerable memoir, Spiteri writes about the trauma of being brutally abused, groomed and guided by the actions and lies of a vicious pedophile.
This is a “coming-of-age story”, a tour-de-force that ushers the listener into the world of abuse and its aftermath, including the lessons learned through pain and self-examination. Spiteri offers a cautionary tale for all parents who are raising children and an anthem of survival for anyone who has suffered the difficulties of youth. In words poetic as well as raw and real, he paints a stunning masterpiece of triumph over tragedy; a powerful canvas of self-discovery, therapeutic growth, and self-love. In our search for a better life, Toy Cars proves that love and healing are possible.

It is f#*king disturbing and pure torture listening to the details of sexual, physical, mental abuse & grooming Nathan experience from the age of just 8 years old, but the message it delivers is beyond powerful.
I barely slepted the first night I started the book. The brutal details replaying in my head, all the fears of a mother re-ignighted.
It will trigger anyone who has suffered their own trauma, aniexty or depression. It triggered me, I found myself struggling to breathe on the verge of a panic attack when Nathan speaks about being so drained from his first sessions of therapy. And when he describes the symptoms of someone who is living with depression.
It will make you cry. The moment that got me good was when Nathan realised he needed help. As someone who suffers from PTSD, that moment is so hard and overwhelming.
While difficult to read, to be able to educate our children, we must first educate ourselves to change the stigma around child sexual abuse, adult sexual abuse, grooming, addiction and violence.
My eyes have been opened to the massive impact this abuse has on a victims lives.
Nathan's strength to write this book will not only help people who have suffered from abuse of any type and people who suffer from mental illness to speak out but to help change the conversations we have with our children.
Nathan was brave enough to write of his trauma, you need to be brave enough to read it.

There are few people who come out the other end of such a toxic, and incredibly tumultuous life experience.
Nathan has survived but seriously, what happened to him, I believe, will haunt him forever. The hidden gift now, is that he has the knowledge and tools to help others and to move past it himself.
It's just crazy that one has to live it and survive it first.
Hands down, one of the hardest books I've read.
