Besonders reizvoll an dieser sehr ausführlichen Anleitung zum Bogenschießen ist die Weise, in der Ascham sein großes Wissen an den Leser und hier an den Zuhörer bringt: er folgt dem Vorbild Aristoteles und erfindet zwei Protagonisten, die sich in einem freundschaftlichen Gespräch unter Gelehrten der Sache annehmen. Den einen nennt er Philologus, also den Freund des Wortes, den anderen nennt er Toxophilus, den Freund des Bogens. Gewidmet hat Ascham das Buch König Heinrich dem Vierten und er übergab es diesem nach seiner Rückkehr von seiner siegreichen Schlacht bei Boulogne. Bei aller Geschichtsverliebtheit kommen auch jene nicht zu kurz, die erwarten, im Toxophilus eine Anleitung zur Schießtechnik und zum Pfeil- und Bogenbau zu finden. Ascham baut sein gesamtes zweites Buch, oder besser gesagt, den zweiten Teil seines Buches, systematisch eigens für diese Leser auf.
