About this listen

He's arrogant. A certified pain in the butt. Maybe just crazy enough to survive.

Jack Atlas, self-proclaimed 'World's Best Assassin', had a simple plan: retire in style and marry the girl of his dreams. Then he gets placed in The Tower—a divine deathtrap where gods pit their creations against each other for the ultimate prize: eternal paradise for you and your friends. The catch? If you lose, well, let's just say your chances of finding a decent bar in oblivion are slim.

Jack, who’s never met a hornet’s nest he didn’t want to kick, soon finds himself on the wrong side of The Black Centipede, a notorious assassin cult with a charming recruitment policy: join or they’ll murder everyone he loves.

Instead of sipping Mai Tai’s on some beach he can’t pronounce; it’s slurping down health potions because he got stabbed by a goblin with a particular fondness for stabbing him in the rear. Heroic quests? Conquer The Tower, appease his assassin overlords, reunite with his dream girl? Nope. Jack instead gets sent to 'dungeon timeout' for bad behavior. That's fine by him.

If anyone’s crazy enough to not just survive, but win against The Tower, it’s Jack.

the characters stood out to me as being interesting and well written. The litrpg genre gets a bad wrap for plain protagonists and progression which seems to just drag on without ever feeling relevant to the story. Tower of jack manages to avoid that issue entirely with Jack atlas and his merry band of assassins as well as a retinue of other interesting characters, combine them with a good story and well built world and you get a book well worth the read.

had me hooked

if you've ever watched the animated comedy series Archer. Thats basically the main character. I found it quite funny. not the funniest book I've read out there.. but it's in the top 20. the narrator is excellent

Like an Archer LITRPG

If you've seen the TV show Archer, then you know what Jack is like. He's a competent idiot, to the point that you're not sure how much of his success is dumb luck vs. him just being an unreliable narrator pretending to be dumb.

The problem is if he's going to continue being dumb. Like, this book was fun, it implies that Jack will grow as a character, but at the same time his ridiculous way of interpreting the towers rules is a part of the appeal. If Jack stops being dumb the series loses it's heart, if he keeps being dumb there is no character development which is frustrating. I'm interested in seeing how it's handled.

One thing that really annoyed me though is how the narrator reads out the character sheet. He reads it like word salad he's trying to spit out as fast as possible. Not pausing between stats or line breaks, not taking a breath, just a stream of words. Even slowing down the playback only makes it slightly easier to interperet, because even though the words come out slower, the gaps between words are completely off disjointing which lines should be a connected portion with the next. He messed up Bog Standard Isekai the same way. Don't get me wrong, I like his narration, but if he keeps mangling character sheets this way then maybe he shouldn't be narrating litrpgs.

Interesting story, frustrating narrator

Loved the first time through and have repeated another 2 times with the same response. Another hit from the Narrator and a new author that I have put on my watch list.

Re-listenable success

I have not laughed that hard since he who fights with monsters. I wasn’t happy with jacks voice at the start but after 2-3 chapters I was used to it and my god is he a great character.
All in all I’d say 5/5 everything was just great, there were sections where I got a little bored but they were all helpful for the story and in general I really enjoyed this. Can’t wait for the next one

Absolute riot

Really funny, and a refreshing change from the usual litrpg tropes. An anti-hero that the reader can like despite his many faults.

Great anti-hero
