About this listen

Twenty-nine-year-old Rayann Germaine, betrayed by her lover, flees in grief and rage. She meets book-store owner Louisa Thatcher, a woman many years her senior, who offers shelter and work...and soon, passion, and a loving place in her life.

But Rayann encounters challenges to this new love - from friends who question its wisdom, from her mother who disapproves of this liaison with a woman her own contemporary, from Louisa's son who learns for the first time his mother's true sexuality.

And there are profound differences between Rayann and Louisa themselves, two women who come from dramatically different places in the spectrum of age and life experience. Their only common ground seems to be the searing attraction that they both try to deny....

I'm coming to appreciate age gap romance but haven't read many. This book is just wonderful. I had a real hangover and will likely relisten again soon!

I wish books like this had always been available to us,!

Starting off with not really liking Rayann, the 29 year old protagonist, you really immerse yourself in her story and absolutely fall in love with her journey. This early Karin Kallmaker book is absorbing and engrossing, as you dwell into a time past but totally resonates with audiences today. The love that develops between Rayann and Louisa is so beautifully written that the 30th anniversary edition remains entirely relevant today. The third major character in this story is the bookshop. Bookshops as well continue to thrive and prosper, despite all that has been thrown against them. Exquisitely narrated by Angela Dawe this is a book well worthy of its reputation.

Never goes out of date

The characters are likeable, there is witty banter and an interesting story of a May/December romance. This is told with genuine understanding of where both women are at within their lives and how Louisa’s past experiences have helped shape her life choices to date. I enjoyed this book.

Enjoyable Read.
