In und um Roland Block geschehen unerklärliche Dinge. Als ihn sein Hausarzt vom Dienst freistellt beschließt er auf einer Fahrt durch die Eifel die Orte seiner Kindheit aufzusuchen und die Ursache seiner Erkrankung herauszufinden. Erstes Ziel dieser Reise ist Monschau. In der alten Tuchmacherstadt begegnet er erschreckenden Phänomenen, die ihn nur noch mehr verunsichern.
Er begibt sich nach Kronenburg und lernt dort die hübsche Buchhändlerin Viola kennen. Zusammen verbringen die beiden unbeschwerte Tage, doch als Roland in einem Bildband über die Eifel eine Fotografie des Totenmaares entdeckt, erfasst ihn eine unerklärliche Unruhe, die ihn zur Weiterreise zwingt. Wenig später kommt es in der kleinen Kapelle des untergegangenen Ortes Weinfeld am Totenmaar zu einer schicksalhaften Begegnung.
