Publisher's Summary

The short-story collection from Irish bestselling author, musician and comedian Blindboy Boatclub.

You don't fully appreciate how large a donkey's head is until it's beside you in a Fiat Punto. The view in my mirror was furry and violent. I was driving blind.

Driving with a donkey stuffed in the back seat; jackdaws pecking brains out through the roof of a confessional box; cat piss and astronauts. This is the world not as you see it, but as it is, twisted from the maverick mind of Blindboy Boatclub.

These are stories of the strange unsettlings in the souls of men caught in between the past and the possible; stories of heart-blinding rage and disquieting compassion.

Taking its title from a twelfth-century English manuscript of the same name, which dehumanised the people and culture of Ireland to facilitate domination, Topographia Hibernica is a collection that unravels the knotted threads of humanity, nature and colonisation from a contemporary Irish perspective.

Called 'one of the most gifted writers of his generation' by the Irish Times, Blindboy Boatclub is the essential voice for the Irish condition in the twenty-first century. Topographia Hibernica is his unmissable short-story collection.

Weird and beautiful

The short storey format is great for reformed podcast addicts looking for a nutritional media diet. A life times worth of small observations, it’s worth a second listen just to absorb. Quirky and unexpected you’ll be thinking about what you just heard for days.

Pure literary genius

I simply love the way Blindboy curls language around itself! I normally struggle with audio books due to ADHD, but the lyricism of his words seduced me each time! Brilliant!!

Great collection of short stories

Many of the things he's been chatting about in his podcast the last year all come together here, like the cats & the mythology. I personally loved Pamela the solicitor. The poteen maker & the guy buying the guitar & the line dancer were all sterling stories too. Great listen especially as it's read by the author.

Enriching and Entertaining

I enjoyed the ark of these stories. It starts off very dark and then the humour evolves. I recommend getting to know Blindboy Boatclub intimately through his podcast. As a long time listener I felt I had a semi rational insight into some of the stories. It was lovely to hear the fruit of these experiences. I’ve not written to him about it but I’d love to hear him introduce William S Boroughs to his listeners. I’ve also got questions about the vernacular around “anus” and if it’s an Irish thing or particular to him as it appears in most stories in some form. Where to go from there? Please listen to it all, it’s enriching.

Even better than Small Bones And A Fist

Blindboy writes the most bizarrely brilliant prose, tells the most queerly engaging stories, and then, like adding salt to a meal, brings out the deeper flavours with his accompanying score. The Pistils of the Dandelions was the first story in a long time to reach right into my chest and crush my heart. R.I.P Silken Thomas.

Best short story book ever.

Magical from start to finish. Chapter 7 is the funniest thing I’ve heard since Richard Pryor albums. Massive talent.

Absurd and Wonderful

each story was impeccable, incredible and absurd, unbelievably clever. I can't even really put my thoughts into words, Im not really sure what I just listened too but I'm awestruck, even the most unlikeable characters in this book seem too absurd to be true but somehow completely relatable, I laughed and cried listening to this. Definitely requires an immediate second listen which I'll do today.

His most personal collection yet

Another great anthology from Blindboy Boatclub, but I will admit this wasn't my favorite of his books so far. These stories feel more personal, more meandering, than his previous collections. closer to his podcasts.
I loved The Donkey, The Cat Piss Astronaut and I'll give you Barcelona, but The Pistils of the Dandelions and St Augustine's Suntan were a bit too dry and grotesque for my liking. In other words, I prefer his early funny stuff.

Wonderful and weird

I listen to the Blindboy podcast on and off, but this was the first book of his that I’ve read/listened to. I haven’t been that drawn to short stories before, so I didn’t expect to love this as much as I did. The audiobook was great, I think Blindboy is a great storyteller both in writing and in performance. For the first time after listening to an audiobook, I’m itching to get the physical copy to read it as well, maybe marking my favourite parts.
