The funny, moving, life-affirming memoir from much-loved comedian and star of The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice and The Apprentice: You're Fired!

'An extraordinary portrait of a son navigating his way through grief and loss in real time. Funny, candid, and measured' GRAHAM NORTON

'This book isn't too much, in the words of Goldilocks, its 'just right'. I both laughed and cried, sometimes at the same time.' - READER REVIEW ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Happily settled in a new relationship and with a dream house of his own, Tom Allen could finally call himself an adult. But when his beloved dad died suddenly, Tom's life was rocked by a fresh set of challenges, and he started to find comfort in his friends, his past and his newly dug vegetable patch.

With his hallmark honesty and wit, Tom writes beautifully about those days, weeks and months following loss, and about how bewildering the practicalities of life can be in the wake of an upheaval - those moments, really, when everything can start to feel a bit too much . . .

Gay British comedian Tom Allen has a laundry list of insecurities and anxieties which he outlines in this autobiographical collection of memories. It’s in stark contrast with his father’s attitude of not letting things worry him. When his father passes away, Tom reflects on the different life lessons his father taught him and the care and love his father showed him.

Tom’s story and gentle humour really grew on me over the course of this audiobook. I could relate to the loss of a parent, to the differences and similarities we find ourselves comparing with that parent, and the legacy we’re left with. It’s not a sad book, Tom is at times amusing, at times nostalgic, but always truthful and honest about where he falls short. 🎧 Tom narrates the audiobook himself and imbues it with the perfect amount of humour and solemnity. I’ll definitely revisit this.

Amusing, thoughtful tribute and self-reflection

This book beautifully narrated by Tom ,it’s an homage to his Dad .It is at once heart warming and jovial. I found it particularly touching as my own Father has recently died .So along with laughter I shed a few tears too
Looking forward to the next book Tom 😍

I could listen to Tom’s stories all day. A heartwarming nostalgic trip into childhood in England and how your relationship changes with parents over time. What a beautiful tribute to your dad.

Loved it! Tom’s storytelling in A++!
