About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Tom Lake by Ann Patchett, read by Meryl Streep.

The breathtaking new novel from Ann Patchett – a Sunday Times and No. 1 New York Times bestseller

‘Filled with the moments I live for in a story’
BONNIE GARMUS, author of Lessons in Chemistry

‘[Tom Lake] has it all ... Young love, sibling rivalry and deep mother-daughter relationships’
REESE WITHERSPOON

‘One of the most beloved authors of her generation’
SUNDAY TIMES

There's more to every love story than what we choose to tell...

It’s spring and Lara’s three grown daughters have returned to the family orchard. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the one story they’ve always longed to hear – of the film star with whom she shared a stage, and a romance, years before.

Tom Lake is a meditation on youthful love, married love, and the lives parents lead before their children are born. Both hopeful and elegiac, it explores what it means to be happy even when the world is falling apart.

‘One of our greatest living chroniclers of love and marriage … Expect wonder; Patchett always delivers’ ELLE

I always enjoy books by Ann Patchett. She gets right inside each character and really makes them come to life. I particularly enjoyed the inside look on the dynamic of a mother with children in their 20s. Having Meryl Streep narrate was wonderful. How does she move so rapidly between characters and pull them off so differently? They are so believable and it feels like it’s playing out right in front of me. Fabulous!

Great author, great narrator!

A pithy tightly written gem of a book enhanced by the delightful Meryl Streep’s excellent narration with all the beautiful dramatic nuances. The listener is right there both as witness and experiencing the ups and downs of the wonderful characters.
Just fantastic!!

If it wasn’t for Meryl Streep I would have bailed out by Chapter 2. Disappointed.

Very average

Meryl Streep’s narration made the characters all so vivid to me. I wonder how I would respond to the story in hardback. She, Ann Pratchett and this story are certainly a match made in heaven. I highly recommend this audiobook… and many thanks to Meryl for reading this beautiful book.

Read beautifully, a heartwarming and gentle recounting of a life lived as it was, family and human connection.

I can't imagine what this book would have been like to read but if Meryl Streep hadn't been throwing out a classic performance, this would have easily been a DNF for me. She's obviously incredible, but after 12 hours, this story takes you exactly nowhere. Maybe that's meant to be the point of a covid novel, but hey, I already got exactly nowhere through covid, I don't want or need to relive that again, even with Meryl Streep in my ears.

Meryl masks a dull story

Love love love. Merryl Streep was the icing on the cake. Loved it, highly recommend. Great summer read.

Simply a delight

Engaging story, of a woman, who turns her back on fame to find love and contentment on a farm. Challenges modern constructs of success.

Good story, beautifully narrated

This book is lovely by all accounts but I found the story slow and the cherry trees not as uplifting as they ought. It was a very slow development which the main characters didn’t quite need, leading to the last 3 chapters which were the most satisfying. Not a book to pick up when you want to be uplifted.

Story was slow
