Publisher's Summary

THIS SUMMER, DIVE INTO TOM LAKE – A BREATH-TAKING NOVEL FROM ANN PATCHETT

This is a story about Peter Duke who went on to be a famous actor. This is a story about falling in love with Peter Duke who wasn’t famous at all. It’s about falling so wildly in love with him – the way one will at twenty-four – that it felt like jumping off a roof at midnight. There was no way to foresee the mess it would come to in the end.

It’s spring and Lara’s three grown daughters have returned to the family orchard. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the one story they’ve always longed to hear – of the film star with whom she shared a stage, and a romance, years before.

Tom Lake is a meditation on youthful love, married love, and the lives parents lead before their children are born. Both hopeful and elegiac, it explores what it means to be happy even when the world is falling apart.

A sublime performance by the remarkable Streep. I was desperate for this never to finish. Please share another on Audible soon.

I absolutely loved this. It is a compelling narrative, the characters are cleverly drawn and the themes heartwarming.

Tom Lake

This lovely peaceful novel, beautifully narrated by Meryl Streep, is a welcome respite from the noise of modern life. Set in a cherry orchard. During Covid lockdown, it captures the surprising piece that comes from impose separation from the demands of normal life.. the reflective tone, the unfolding of personal histories and the complex relationships between parents and children past, and present real human life and the lunar of stage and screen create a fascinating and thoughtful respite. Space.
The focus on the personal does not come at the expense of the deeper aspects of human experience, and a quest for meaning . Definitely worth reading..

Great author, great narrator!

I always enjoy books by Ann Patchett. She gets right inside each character and really makes them come to life. I particularly enjoyed the inside look on the dynamic of a mother with children in their 20s. Having Meryl Streep narrate was wonderful. How does she move so rapidly between characters and pull them off so differently? They are so believable and it feels like it’s playing out right in front of me. Fabulous!

Meryl Streep WOW!

A gem of a story, beautiful and poignant. The forgotten memories of young love. The pandemic forces a return to the family farm. Over the hot summer of harvest a mother gradually tells the stories of her youth, revealing herself to the delight & shock of her three daughters.

Fantastic narration

Loved the narration by Meryl Streep and I like Patchett’s writing style but I can’t say that I loved this story. Worth a listen but it ain’t no “Dutch House”.

A masterpiece.

A beautiful interweaving of past and present. So clever the way the themes, characters and events of the marvellous play, Our Town, recur throughout the ‘present’ narrative and in the exquisite descriptions of the cherry farm. Very moving and brilliantly performed by legendary Meryl Streep.

This book meanders aimlessly. Slow to get to a plot. A very hard listen. Could not finish.

Insightful / gentle cherry infused family story

Insightful of what happens to some in the movie/ acting world
Yet a gentle family centered story encapsulated by cherry trees

Perfection!

I’ve read all of Ann Patchett’s novels and rate this as her best. A compelling narrative and well drawn characters draw you in quickly. The book celebrates love and family, but also acknowledges loss and the passing of time.
Meryl Streep is the perfect choice as narrator.

Beautifully written. Beautifully narrated.

Ann Patchett has an extraordinary grasp of the English language and is a master at weaving words together so eloquently, so subtly. I loved the multiple contexts, the back and forth in time, the intimacy between the characters crafted with such respect. I appreciated the narration by Meryl Streep, who was totally worthy of the task, and did an excellent job. I will listen to it again.

To say that Merle Streep brings this to life is an understatement. I was completely absorbed in this amazing rendition made possible by the eloquence, intelligence, sadness and kindness of the words of Ann Patchett. Will live with me.

Lovely story

I have a feeling this story and these characters will live with me for a long time. It reads like an easy summer read, but it’s deceptively deep and stirring in a way. And I just never wanted Meryl Streep to stop. It was an added gift to listen to her. Hearing her voice, I almost saw the whole thing as a movie.

beautiful story beautifully told

I was recommended this by my book club. I had high on hopes but initially struggled to get into it but a couple of chapters in I was hooked. so hooked that by I have nine listened over two days.

Meryl steep is perfect for narration.

it is not a story that will stay with you forever or one that will change your life but it is a gentle story about lovely people.
if you like Anne Patchett this doesn't disappoint.

if you like Little Women and Anne of Green gables, or Bridges of Madison county you'll enjoy this.

Beautifully written and read

This was challenging to get into despite Meryll’s lovely narration, but you quickly get hooked by the plot and the slower pace of the story feels natural. These characters and places will stay with me for a long time.

Lovely warm story- reminds me of ‘Little Women’ in many ways!

Lovely, warm and gentle listen. Meryl Streep is incredible (obviously!).
Really makes me think of ‘Little Women’ in many ways- small town America (farm), insular, the protagonist and her daughters and that bond etc etc.
I found it a little difficult to get into it at the beginning, but persisted and enjoyed it a lot in the end.

Not interesting

I cannot understand the rave reviews. In fact I am not going to use Audible’s reviews again as I’ve signed up for a few undistinguished books after relying on them. I want to find new author’s but this system isn’t working for me.
This book is far too long. After almost 5 hours I noticed there was another 6 to go and groaned. That’s when I gave up - l think that’s a reasonable time to have caught a reader’s interest. They must have paid a lot to get Ms Streep to read this but even she wasn’t able to make an interesting read out of this plodding, predictable story.

Very lovely; very American.

Merely Streep is a dream narrator and she could read me stories forever. The novel is beautifully crafted, evoking landscapes and characters in a perfectly paced way. It is also a tribute to American insularity. I can imagine no other novel if it’s ambition from anywhere else in the world being so contained in the bubble of its own culture. Even Chekhov is somehow appropriated.

A great read.

Starts at the very same place it finishes which is rather lovely. Fabulous story. Soft and gentle, beautifully written. You can almost imagine yourself in some of the places in the book. Particularly the lake. I want to visit. Even if it’s just to sit for a while. After all, cherries have always been my favourite fruit.
