Ed è proprio durante un ritiro cui prende parte anche il pittore, precisamente al momento in cui gli ospiti compatti recitano il rosario, che avviene l'omicidio dell'ex senatore Michelozzi. Il procuratore Scalambri, supportato dal pittore cerca di risolvere il caso ma non ne viene a capo. L'hotel viene così sgomberato senza che nessuno venga accusato dell'omicidio.
