Story
PI Gemma Lincoln and Sergeant Angie McDonald are on the case - tracking down a cold-blooded killer and piecing together evidence that hints that the murdered may have been the cop. Gabrielle Lord draws on all her skills to weave a story that is bloody and unpredictable, yet at the same time personal, warm and very thoughtful. She stands alone as a writer who can bring together a brutal, complex crime plot with a very modern relationship story and make both threads thrilling and compelling.

The house was stripped bare of all its treasures. Gone was the furniture, the family silver, the paintings and the antique china. And if that was a shock for Charles Todd, painter of horses, how much more harrowing was the trauma for his cousin Donald, whose house it was and whose young wife lay on the sitting room floor, bloody and dead... A coincidental meeting with a middle-aged widow sends Charles off to Australia, on the trail of a gang with a fruitful business in forging works of art.

Hiding treasure is a dangerous game
This has always been a favourite of mine.
Alexander Kinloch might be a painter who lives in the isolated and wild Scottish Highlands but he’s also a dedicated and loyal son who's bravery, intelligence and nerve are tested to the limit when he finds himself pitted against violent and deadly embezzlers who've stolen his step-father’s company fortune and facing down the formidable Zoe Lang who’s determined to wrest a treasured family heirloom and hand it to the nation.
Despite not being a painter himself, Dick Francis’ books on creating art have an authenticity that's both deep and raw.
I wish the quality of the audio was 100% but having listened to this version as a child in its original cassette format I don't want anyone but Tony Britton as my narrator.

Could have been better...
The story is pure Dick Francis - clever plot, exciting twists, a bit of sex, thoroughly described violence, and a happy hero ending. a ripping yarn... The narration is very good, and made the story come alive. BUT the productin quality was quite variable, sounding sometimes very clear snd close, other times fuzzy and on other side of the room. It detracted from the experience.

Thanks, an excellent book, a good listen.
Would you listen to To the Hilt again? Why?
I would listen again, the storyline was good, I listened over a long weekend, sandwiched between DIY and Gardening, Gave up TV and enjoyed the experience. Wanted to hustle it along occasionally, but that is part of the enjoyment, you felt you were there.

Poor recording spoilt my enjoyment
I enjoyed listening to this story. It was well written and I'd like to say it was really well narrated, however, the background static spoiled what would otherwise have been a good recording.
I have listened to countless novels on Audible and this has been the only one of poor quality.

Great story, poor recording
I really enjoyed the story, it was clever and well written. the poor recording is very distracting though. And the performance is sometimes a bit off, like the narrator forgot which voice he was using for which character.
