About this listen

From one of the best writers in American literature, a classic novel about smuggling, intrigue, and love.

To Have and Have Not is the dramatic story of Harry Morgan, an honest man who is forced into running contraband between Cuba and Key West as a means of keeping his crumbling family financially afloat. His adventures lead him into the world of the wealthy and dissipated yachtsmen who throng the region and involve him in a strange and unlikely love affair.

In this harshly realistic, yet oddly tender and wise novel, Hemingway perceptively delineates the personal struggles of both the "haves" and the "have nots" and creates one of the most subtle and moving portraits of a love affair in his oeuvre. By turns funny and tragic, lively and poetic, remarkable in its emotional impact, To Have and Have Not is literary high adventure at its finest.©1937 Ernest Hemingway. Despite the wonderful performance from Mr Patton, I found this meandering, aimless and forgettable. The source material gives one no reason to care or invest in any of the characters, and several lengthy tracts felt like pure wordcount. Although his scene-setting and descriptive abilities paint a beautiful background, Hemingway's blatant racist reduction of non-white characters to cheap stereotypes is jarring in the 21st century. I'm glad I used my monthly credit for this as I would be very unhappy if I'd spent my money on this.

Definitely "Have Not"

I thought it was unusual writing for Hemingway, the story sounded a little too "Hollywood".

You can readily tell where Hemingway sutured together the different stories that comprise this book, but it doesn’t matter, it tells the story he wanted to tell about what some people have to do for money. I enjoy Hemingway’s Cuban period, the setting is wonderful, and there is real resonance with his take on equality here, across economic and race lines. Recommended. Terrific narration of course, as always.

Minor Hemingway but wonderful all the same
