Publisher's Summary

In late 1926, the newly married Daisy Dalrymple and Detective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher of Scotland Yard take an ocean voyage to America for their honeymoon. Daisy and Alec are accompanied by Daisy's childhood friend, Phillip Petrie; his wife, Gloria; and Gloria's father, American millionaire industrialist Caleb P. Arbuckle, and all are looking forward to a pleasant, uneventful trip.

But at the last minute they are joined by Arbuckle's new friend, Yorkshire millionaire Jethro Gotobed, and his new wife, Wanda - a showgirl whom all but Gotobed are convinced is a gold digger of the worst sort. Then, having barely lifted anchor, the ocean liner is beset by a series of suspicious accidents and deaths. With harsh weather and rough seas putting many out of commission due to seasickness - including Alec - it soon falls to Daisy to figure out what connection there might be between the seemingly unrelated incidents. Convinced that there's a murderer aboard ship, Daisy must unmask the culprit or culprits before she or anyone else falls victim.

Daisy is back!

I was a little leery about this book because the last in the series was average at best. I found myself quite disappointed because I have grown to know and love these characters. It was like all of us were going to meet at a party, full of expectation and everybody brought Jewel taco dip....Well don't worry because Daisy is back. I bought into the cast of characters right away and found I loved them, despised them, chortled at the mass chaos our Daisy creates so well. Get this one book. You'll enjoy every minute of it.

Excellent story, Indifferent narration

I LOVED this book. Carola Dunn did an excellent job - great plot, well developed characters and complementary story lines. One of the things I hated was the narration, parts of it. Specifically, the narrator's portrayal of some male characters. She had some of the ship's staff sounding like a female rather a male. It's not even a case of them sounding pubescent merely extremely feminine. Her portrayal of Alec Fletcher was ridiculous - a middle class policeman sounding impossibly snooty, and more upper crust than someone like Philip who is from the upper class. His portrayal was at variance with the character created by Dunn. I found him unlikeable and thoroughly deservingly of a longer period of sick leave. Then there is Daisy's voice, which was extremely squeaky and childlike which reduces Alec practically to the level of a pedophile when they are being romantic. Overall, it's a fantastic book but the narrator just did not do it justice.

Dull story compared to the series usual standard

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The solution is strikingly obvious from about 1/3rd of the way into the story... it takes the characters a long time to get to it, which distracts from the story considerably. There's also less detail of the era and setting than some of the earlier books.

Would you be willing to try another book from Carola Dunn? Why or why not?

Yes, the series is generally entertaining.

Have you listened to any of Lucy Rayner’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The accents and pronunciation in earlier books hit some pretty low notes, but seem to be considerably improved this time around.

Was To Davy Jones Below worth the listening time?

Yes, but not the best of the series.

Story Satisfying; Narrator Not

I enjoy the Daisy Dalrymple mysteries, but I needed to force myself to finish this performance. The narrator uses painfully high pitches for some of the female characters and artificially lowered pitches for male characters. The reason I gave as many as two stars to the performance is that Rayner paces her reading well and articulates clearly. However, I will avoid any book she narrates in the future.

This one not so good!

I usually enjoy these books. They are clean and an easy listen while I clean the house. I have no idea why the writer dumbed down her two main characters after building their personality in the previous books. I was doing a ton of eye rolling while listening to this one. Hope the next book in the series goes back to the original writing style & I wonder why they decided to completely skip over the wedding. Hmmmmm🤔

Not my favorite

Finally Daisy and her detective inspector husband are on their honeymoon. Once they boarded the ship the murders start. I didn’t find anything mysterious in this story. I was distracted froM the story by the narrators “unique and annoying “interpretation of the many accents.

Just Waaaay to Predictable Sorry

Sorry but guessed exactly who and why before middle of book. Not impressed at all and this is the second one where "there is only "I think what must have appointed" is the ending....I thought the narrator was good as usual tho.

solid story lightly executed

entertaining story with attractive characters. satisfying plot, not particularly sophisticated or complex but enough to keep interest. read well with nice characterisation for audio...some accents a bit ropey, but didn't interfere with pleasure of listening. Daisy Dalrymple a pleasant series , period feel well enough delineated to make.me.curious for more.
