Publisher's Summary

In the winter of 1924, Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher travels to a school friend's house to witness the estate's famous Guy Fawkes celebration. But she gets more than the quiet weekend at the quaint family manse that she was originally hoping for.

The home is the site of some severe family tension. The Viscount and head of the family is a strict and unyielding sort, insisting that everyone - especially his children - meet his own unreasonable expectations. On the evening of the Guy Fawkes celebration, the Viscount is found dead on the floor of his study, killed by his own hand. What's more, he apparently first killed a guest - a married woman visiting England from Australia - before turning the gun on himself.

Now it's up to Alec Fletcher, Daisy's husband and a DCI of Scotland Yard, to unravel the mystery and the long-held family secrets that led to this state of affairs. But a solution will require, perhaps, more than a little help from Daisy herself.

A great Daisy Dalrymple book

Daisy goes to visit the estate of a school friend to cover their special Guy Fawkes celebration, complete with a bonfire and guy and a big fireworks show. But when she gets there, not all is well with the family.

Then Jack, her friend's brother, makes the mistake of inviting an Australian couple they meet at a pub to their home for their large Guy Fawkes party, upsetting his parents, social snobs. But is that the only reason they are unhappy? As the fireworks show concludes, Jack finds his father and Mrs. Gooch dead, apparently with Lord Tyndall's having murdered the lady before committing suicide, causing Alec, her Scotland Yard Detective Chief Inspector husband, to come to the case, when he learns an explosive secret within the family.

The solution to this book was well-written and a surprise ending.

I was a bit disappointed by the narration, as Lucy Rayner can't do a credible Australian accent and mispronounced several words. But I'm so thrilled to be able to listen to this book that I don't mind!

This was an excellent book that I listened to straight through from start to finish because I couldn't put it down!

Amazing storyline and fabulous narration!

Lucy Rayner is a slow-clap, standing-ovation, kind of narrator. I wish all my books were narrated by her and the voices and accents she gives each character makes the story flow so well. This book had a relatively straight forward storyline and likable characters with a huge plot twist along the way. Our beloved heroine, the Honorable Daisy Dalrymple is right in the thick of things as always! Carola Dunn has done it again, and I came along for the ride! Highly recommend, 10/10!

Unbearable narration

Not a lot to review here. I have read some of this series in book form. Recommend others go with that. The narration here is so bad, that I was cringing, unable to focus on the story.

Predictable But still a fan!

Daisy is a wonderful peron and I enjoy every bit of her! The mysteries are not the most complex but the writing and narration are fun and I love them while working!

Story was good but the narrator was not my cup of tea

I somewhat enjoyed the story with its many twists and turns and interesting characters, but it was sadly diminished by the reader’s high pitched voice, which took away, for me, the reality of some of the characters. One being a woman who was supposedly very aloof but unfortunately the voice used for her was high and squeaky, not a voice that gave any impression of an aloof woman at all. Maybe it was the recording that gave the reader/narrator the high pitched sound?

Not as interesting

Preferred the previous books plot. Less nasty characters. More interesting setting. The bad guy got murdered which is always a relief.

Always fun

Yet another great story in this series. I did guess the culprit from the beginning, but it was good to see how it all played out.

Dreadful American narration

Ruined by appalling attempt at Birmingham accent (I’m from Birmingham) and mispronounced English names which, given it was the victim of the murder, was excruciating to hear all the way through the book. Would prevent me recommending the audiobook to anyone.

Always a delight but 1 annoying mispronunciation

Lucy Rayner is by far the best performer of this series, but the occasional American mispronunciation creeps in. This can usually be ignored, but unfortunately in this book it was the surname of one if the main couples. Gooch - pronounces Goosh throughout. So annoying and very distracting. However, other than that a delightful listen as always.

Nice story but some cringe worthy regional accents

Not a bad story but some cringe worthy regional accents. reasonable Welsh but dreadful Midlands accent.
