Tine, klockarens dotter, befinner sig ofta i jägmästarfamiljen Bergs hus på Sönderjylland. Hon är där så ofta att hon nästan betraktas som en dotter i huset. När jägmästaren blir inkallad efter krigsutbrottet 1864 samtidigt som hans fru och barn reser till Köpenhamn, blir Tine kvar för att se efter huset.
Kriget bryter ut och i och med det förändras även Bergs syn på Tine. För Tine är det något oerhört, något som är större än livet självt. Herman Bang (1857–1912 var en dansk författare och journalist som skrev ett trettiotal romaner och noveller under sin livstid. Han räknas till en av de största inom dansk litteratur.
