About this listen

In 1959, Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, was commissioned by the Sunday Times to explore 14 of the world’s most exotic cities. Fleming saw it all with a thriller writer’s eye. From Hong Kong to Honolulu, New York to Naples, he left the bright main streets for the back alleys. The result is a series of vivid snapshots of a mysterious, vanished world.

A brilliant travel account by one of my favourite authors Ian Fleming! If only I'd know about this book earlier, as I would have read or listened to it much sooner! As the name of one of Fleming's James Bond books is called - You Only Live Once - so get out there, visit new places and explore the world even if you don't have the generous newspaper budget that Fleming was given for his trip in order to write the essays that make up his book. As Fleming notes "travel broadens the mind and it is surely broad minds that we need in this world!" I feel his message is as true now in 2025 as it was when he wrote it in 1959! In sum, I highly recommend this book which is also excellently narrated and Barnaby Edwards does a superb job with all the foreign accents, names and phrases used throughout! 5/5!
