About this listen

A dark fae king, three deadly trials and a forbidden passion that could destroy everything....

A sexy new series perfect for fans of: Half-Blood Academy, Bound to the Battle God and Stolen by the Fae King!

Fae exist only in children’s stories, or so I thought. That was before a nightmarish creature of the Fae Realm dropped into my life. He claimed a seven-pointed mark on my skin signified my magical lineage, the bit of DNA my mother passed down. Days after I arrive in the Fae Realm, I’m thrown into a series of trials titled ‘The Devotion’. I must compete with demons, vampires, elves and more who want to claim their place at the future King’s side. I have no interest in this guy, but it doesn’t help that the King-to-be is a gorgeous, brooding fae. He’s dominant, commanding and everything I shouldn’t want. But the longer I’m here, the more I’m questioning everything - including my own heart.

I’m digging the story, the idea of the trials grabbed me as it’s a trope I haven’t come across very often. I found the FMC to be a bit of a petulant brat throughout most of the book. That being said I think the fact of the British accent of the female narrator might have made her come across as more petulant and brattish. I was put off that, by my standards, she didn’t seem to have much bad assery, self control or enough emotional maturity to take the situation seriously enough to learn about her power or much about the realm she found herself in. The author didn’t give much in the way of illuminating the nature of the nature of the magic of any of the characters really, and coming to the end I was pretty frustrated that it seemed she had little redeemable qualities or ability to fight for herself. By the last two chapters I found myself really hoping she’d grow a pair and step up. I can see how this makes for a good coming into power narrative and builds tension…which I confess I’m not the biggest fan of at this time in my life. The male narrator did a good job, no irritation there. I found the relationships a little bit … inadequately fleshed out? Realistic? - the development a little bit lacking perhaps but, the overall story had merit and is well written. I’ve listen to another book co-written by the author that also had a level of novelty amidst the mass of paranormal romance books so I kept going, adequately intrigued to see where the story was going to go. I’m heading in to the second book because I want the good feels of the FMC coming into her own and standing up for something - the relationship, the realm, her family, whatever it may be, and to earn her place, respect and the relationship. And, I love a good battle/war/fight between good and evil so fingers crossed.

Good, somewhat frustrating tension, pretty sure…hoping book 2 delivers

The story is basic and slow, it is a monotone of words.
It is easy to listen to but more for the background while busy.

Slow and dull

It was hard to stop once I started the book. Felt all emotions. The best narrators.

Loved it

I can see the story has legs and is interesting so far (chapter 7) but I am struggling with the narration and the voices that the female narrator is putting on for the characters. It is really ruining the mood of the book but I will push on it the hopes the male narrator can save it for me and not have to put this my DNF list.

Edit: just noticed another review say they increased the speed of the narrator and I gave it a go at 1.2x. Definitely improved the listening quality of the book.

A struggle

Love the story line although took me a minute to adjust to the narrators! Finished all three books in 3 days!

Wow!

I don’t know just no. The narration for male voices was not convincing and the whole book felt off and felt like I have heard it all before including Character names. Returning

Cringy

Overall a decent storyline. But the narration, more of the male characters, was terrible. Slow, like they were all dense. I ended up turning up the speed and it made it better.

Narration wasn’t for me

Liked the story line but the narrator is difficult to listen to at times. Hope the second book has a good story line

Good storyline but the narrator

I so wanted to finish this book but the narrator was aweful to listen to.

Great story but couldn't finish book

The story has potential, but lacked some of the character building and world building, and relationship building even.

Disappointing
