Story
Librarian Sylvia Ashe knows nothing about her past, having grown up without a father and a mother who refused to discuss him. When she stumbles upon a diary that suggests she's descended from magicians, she's skeptical. After all, magicians are special, and she's just an ordinary woman who loves books. She seeks answers from a member of the most prominent family of magicians, but she quickly learns that finding the truth won't be easy, especially when he turns out to be as artless as her, and more compelling and dangerous than books.

Publisher's Summary
The Sunday Times number four best seller.
Within the boroughs of London, nestled among its streets, hides another city, filled with magic.
Magic and love. Love and magic. They destroy everything in the end....
Anna’s aunt has always warned her of the dangers of magic. Its twists. Its knots. Its deadly consequences.
Now Anna counts down the days to the ceremony that will bind her magic forever.
Until she meets Effie and Attis.
They open her eyes to a London she never knew existed. A shop that sells memories. A secret library where the librarian feeds off words. A club where revellers lose themselves in a haze of spells.
But as she is swept deeper into this world, Anna begins to wonder if her aunt was right all along.
Is her magic a gift...or a curse?

Great book
Although I am of a similar age as the binders, I found this book enjoyable.
There was some resolution at the end, but there is more to come.
Please let it be soon!
Cari Thomas is new on the scene and she has a wonderful talent.
The narrator, Bea Holland did a good job on the female voices but the male voices- not so much.

Magnificent!
Truly the best piece of urban witchy fantasy I have heard in a very long time, I loved it so much I’ve ordered a physical autographed copy!
I did find it slow and dull to start, but I am extremely glad I persevered because this is my new favourite book. So much more than a young girl discovering witchy night clubs! I loved the wonderful, unique, magical world the author wove and think this is going to become the next big thing. I grew grew to love and care for some of the characters and hate others with a vengeance which to my mind is the mark of excellent story telling. The plot was unpredictable enough to keep me guessing. Just read it, you won’t be disappointed!

Beautiful universe
I loved this novel! I loved the narration and the story, set in a magical reality where revenge and love play havoc with the life of Anna, who is a really well developed character with a great arc. If you like Naomi novik and Dianna Wynn Joans this might be your next read

Disappointed
This book disappointed me on a number of levels. The writing itself could have used a bit more sophistication/ an editor:
‘the end of the corridor was a dead end’
‘around her neck like a necklace tightening’
‘out of sight without anyone seeing’
A metronome is referred to as tic-tocking… metronomes famously just tic-tic-tic with a repetitive sound.
Also disturbing was the portrayal of the ‘fat’ character, Rowan. She is obsessed with food, physically clumsy and socially over-the-top. It felt to me like it fed into stereotypes about larger bodied people.
I did not feel like the narrator did justice to the range of characters.
