About this listen

A golden thread joined them, a bond that went deeper than love—and it had nearly destroyed them.

Wren Embervale and Torj Elderbrock share a dark and bloody history. On the brink of another war, and overwhelmed by the force of their feelings for one another, Torj discovers there is far more to their bond than mere passion. The legendary warsword is determined to protect Wren at all costs, even if it means lying to her… Even if it means losing her forever.

Meanwhile, Wren is struggling to find her place in the world both as an advanced student of alchemy at the ancient academy of Drevenor, and as one of the heirs to a lost kingdom. With the midrealms once again facing destruction, Wren must decide: loyalty or liberation? Legacy or love?

As new political players emerge, Wren discovers that her storm magic is more powerful than she ever imagined and that it could tear the kingdoms apart.

Will she and Torj find their way back to each other, or will the ancient magic that binds them become their undoing?

From the author of the bestselling Legends of Thezmarr series, Thorns & Fire by Helen Scheuerer is the second book in The Ashes of Thezmarr trilogy. Perfect for romantasy fans, this spellbinding sequel delivers heart-wrenching choices, a found family to root for, and a love that defies the odds.

It would be an understatement to say that my hopes were sky high for this one. When I tell you that it exceeded all of my lofty expectations by FAR, I am not exaggerating.

I wanted all of my woes from the ending of book one to be magically fixed immediately. They weren't. I really had to suffer. I feel sorry for me, but more importantly I feel sorry for Wren and Torj.

Torj pined in a way that no Warsword has pined before. Wren was sad, confused and stressed.

I felt whiplash all the way through. I spent a huge chunk of this book with watery eyes. From all the sadness or from all the laughs. The slow burn was slooooooow and then POW POW POW tiny Embers, to raging infernos. And back and forth we go!

What I really love about The Ashes of Thezmarr is that we get to see the scars left behind after the war is won. It's not always hunky-dory. But all of my beloved characters are still there and they're taking on the next big threat. I love all of their friendships and banter so much.

The People's Vanguard are tools.

I can't spoil things, but the end was full of twists and turns that caught me by surprise over and over again.

I'm dying for the next book and so very very glad that it won't be long! Thezmarr is definitely one of my happy places (I'm unsure what that says about me given the state of things).

Easily my favourite read of this year, I binged it happily.
