Critic Reviews

The book centres Black characters, and its prose sings. This Wicked Fate is a delightful novel about literal Black Girl Magic, found family, and queer love, with adventures and a satisfying twist on Greek mythology

Another fantastic book from Kalynn Bayron. Jordan Cobb’s narration makes it easy to disappear into the world.

Another great read!

This is probably one of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to in a long time. There were twist and turns, surprises, and creative original ideas! Plus, and queer (I’m part of the community, so I am allowed to use this word), black family is my dreams come true!
I really want more! Just keep publishing until there is nothing left to write one or about.

I love this so much

I really struggled with getting back into books for a long time and this series brought me back. While it had interesting moments it didn’t consume my waking thoughts and demand my attention like other series.

I would highly recommend this series if you feel in a funk for fantasy and want something set in the modern day with some appearances of gods/goddess of the past. The connection to mythology and reimagining / reinterpretation of long lost history held this series together. The scenes on the open ocean especially conjured up the same feeling of watching Pirates of the Caribbean.

Once again the characters were central to the books success but the ending was inevitable from the very first book and felt as though I was just listening to confirm my suspicions.

I really wanted to love this series as I can’t think of better power than growing plants. I was left with a deep feeling of longing for more which is the worst way for a series to end.

Pros: the characters, the magic, the ocean scene

Cons: the villains, some central motivations for the characters and emotional rubber banding, paint by numbers plot

An easy series to ease your way back into fantasy
