About this listen

It's not going well for NE Division: half the force is off sick, all leave has been cancelled, someone has firebombed a migrant hostel and there's a massive climate change protest march happening this Saturday. With officers dropping like flies, Detective Inspector Logan McRae has to kick off a major murder investigation with a skeleton staff of misfits, idiots and malingerers - aka DS Steel's team - until the top brass can arrange back-up from other divisions.

But, as bad as everything seems, there's something far more sinister lurking in the heat haze of this sweltering Aberdeen summer: something that's been building for years. Something that longs to sing its horrible song . . .

And it's clear that things are going to get much, much worse before this is over.

So good to read a Logan Macrae novel. Full of sarcasm, black humour and in-your-face reality. The crimes kept my attention and the resolutions were somewhat unexpected. There did seem to be a lot of narrative making this a long read in places.

For value and enjoyment I wouldn’t start with this instalment - knowing all the characters and their quirks made it very enjoyable.

Great to have the team back!

The unbeatable triumvirate of audiobook delight - Stuart MacBride, Logan Macrea and Steve Worsley. And it's a corker of a story, too. I'm hoping for at least one or two more from this team, before Logan has to retire.

Another excellent novel

The humour and the language all come together to make a really great read. I had forgotten how good these characters are together. It’s been too long since they were all together. Thank you for writing another in this wonderful series. I loved every minute of it.

The return of a fabulous cast

I’ve really missed the Logan McRae series. I love the character interaction in this entire series.
This book felt incredibly detailed. It painted a very detailed picture of what was happening so I was able to get lost in the story.
Bringing back Steve Worsley as the narrator was excellent, he is easy to listen to and the way he reads brings the characters to life. I much prefer his style of reading to some of the other narrators who insist on using stupid, distracting voices.
Overall, excellent book. Hope we won’t have to wait as long for the next Logan book.

Excellent story to keep you enthralled

Absolutely fabulous

Stuart MacBride started this wonderful series a few years ago now and they were absolutely brilliant. Now they have run their course, and the author has resorted to far too much padding, dumbing it down with mindless and endless unfunny sections of radio hosts, songs, their lyrics, to pointless conversations, much in a very babyish style, to an actual plot which was very flimsy rather boring, and somewhat political. Not everyone wants to listen to a Left v Right political agenda, sometimes they want to leave politics on silent and indulge in a some non fiction.

7 hours too long
