Spoilt by narrator

I enjoy almost all of Lisa Jewell’s books. This has been a huge disappointment, mainly because of the narrator. The story itself starts off promisingly, and I feel I might have rated it a lot higher but for one major problem. The narrator is way over the top in her characterisation. This unfortunately left me disliking all of the people in the book. The men especially come over as idiots, and it was a shame as beneath it all, I believe there was an enjoyable tale. My advice would be to read the book rather than listen to it.

Annoying

The story was ok but not the best from Lisa Jewell. I did finish it despite the narrator being extremely annoying with ludicrous different unconvincing voices. Only read this if you can tolerate it. I did with gritted teeth as the story was compelling.

Ok book but OMG the Narrator is horrendous

I actually quite enjoyed the story but the narrator.......... well she is the most annoying patronising sarcastic narrator I have ever listened to and to be honest I was going to stop listening but wanted to know how it needed so endured it !!!! She was unbelievable had the most annoying voice and could not hold down an accent if her life depended on it !!!! It was a totally unpleasant listen !

Homophobic attitudes & inaccuracies regarding adoption

Usually love Lisa Jewell but found this very disappointing. A few things really grated on me & spoiled my enjoyment. One was the frequent homophobic remarks made by Dig - they were totally unnecessary to the story & his character & made me feel very uncomfortable hearing them. The other was the inaccurate way that adoption was addressed. Please do a bit of research if you plan to write about adoption. The idea that a birth parent can just track down an adopted child, find their address & leave a cuddly toy on their doorstep is hugely disturbing for many adopted children & adoptive parents. The child’s perspective was never considered in the slightest.
