About this listen

It begins with a letter... The letter contains a request - think of a number, any number - and a sealed envelope. Inside the envelope is that number... When Dave Gurney, retired NYPD homicide detective, is contacted by an old college acquaintance about some startling letters he’s been receiving, it is at first little more than a diverting but sinister puzzle. Until the acquaintance is brutally killed.

Suddenly Gurney finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation that makes no sense. The killer seems to have known his victim intimately. How else was he able to predict his victim’s thoughts, even his actions? How did he know his darkest secrets? The killer is smart and he is playing with the police...

JV has setup a terrific series with a clever premise that despite some small narrative leaps — are tied up well in the conclusion.

Read excellently by the narrator, it’s a solid thriller that offers something a little off-norm!

An intriguing premise delivered well

Keeps you engaged throughout, dramatic details add to the mood. Brilliant narrator although female intonations are a bit funny. Jeff Harding’s voice and manner is as if from end of century American police movies - very suitable to this type of books, I find it; the timbre is very pleasant too. I will seek more books by the same author and narrator.

Very good

I found this tale while searching for novels narrated by Jeff Harding, a particular favourite of mine, and I’m so glad I did. Vernon has created a brilliantly sharp character in Gurney, and his thrilling, bone-chilling serial killer investigation had me fully invested right until the end. Enjoyed his particular pace and the exacting detail so much that im off to listen to the rest of his collection straight away!

Brilliant

The story started strong and progressed well. Though I thought there were some weak aspects to the story line. Nevertheless, I enjoyed listening to the reading greatly. Jeff Harding brought the characters to life and did a terrific job with all the voice traits needed. I’m now off to download the next in the series. 😎

Great narration
