Publisher's Summary

New Orleans, a city of mystery and magic, of secrets and dreams, and a history drenched in both love and the deepest of heartache.

When ballet dancer Clara Campbell arrives in New Orleans, lonely and homesick, she is immediately captivated by the story of Windisle Plantation and the tragic tale that is said to have transpired beyond its gate. Legend has it that it is abandoned by all living souls, but to Clara’s great surprise, it is not a ghost she hears through the stone wall surrounding the property, but a flesh and blood man: a scarred stranger with a pain deeper and darker than the churning waters of the Mississippi river that flows beside his self-imposed prison.

The ruined man behind the wall hides himself from the world. The last thing he expects is to find a friend in the selfless girl who speaks to him through the cracks in the rock. The girl who keeps returning week after week. The girl who makes him wish for things he has long since given up on. The girl who strikes both fear and hope within his wounded heart. But there can be no future for them, no life beyond Windisle, for no one knows better than him that monsters only live in the dark.

The Wish Collector is the story of shame and triumph, of loneliness and love, and the miracle of two hearts connecting despite the strongest of barriers between them.

Couldn’t make it past chapter six

I was so bored. Perhaps it became a literary masterpiece, but I don’t think I should have to force myself to continue a book. The girl is super sweet and bland, the guy (we should have had a lot more of him) was better, but no incredible personality either. The mystery/riddle was not riveting. I think it was one of those slow start books, taking a while to set the scene, but I was getting cross with the snail pace, so I stopped.

Beautiful story!! ❤❤

Such an unexpected story. A little magic, melancholy and a modern day like depiction of beauty and the beast in the south. There's lots of history told in this story which takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana. This story touches upon a beautiful love story that takes place during the 1800's which due to the times was forbidden but is tastefully written. Then you have Clara and Jonah our current hero and heroine who during their journey are entwined in Angelina and John's sad and heartbreaking love story. I had a love- hate time with this audible. I loved the story and characters but hated some of the sadness and time it took for me find out what was going on with the suspense. The narration by Zachary was soooo passionate and Virginia Rose was awesome too. For me, this is a true romance and love story without a lot of profanity and mature sexual themes. (I do like those too). There is some but it was minimal and refreshing. The author had a well written story to tell!! This is not a short listen, it's a long journey to the HEA and addresses real life cultural issues but I am glad I took a chance. When I read the summary I was thinking maybe not but I usually do when Zachary is narrating. 😉 I've read and listened to Mia Sheridan before and this one was worth my credit.

✫✫ 4 Stars ✫✫

I enjoyed this book because it was different. I really liked the "curse" aspect of the story. It takes place in NOLA so that makes the witchy stuff so much more understandable to me. The rest of the story was good too, I was anxious to know what really happened to Jonah 8 years before and was so happy that the author didn't leave anything up in the air. The ending was sweet, I love that about Mia Sheridan's writing, the most broken characters always grow so much and get their HEA! The narration was awesome! Zachary & Virginia were perfectly cast for this book. I love Virginia Rose's voice, it's a little deep which I think it perfect for narrating.

Good story about redemption but “sanitized slavery” piece was ridiculous

I enjoyed this story and loved how Clara and Jonah came together, first as confidantes separated by a wall to friends and finally lovers. My one critique of the story is that the John/Angelina piece bordered on insulting to those who educated on the reality of slavery and the dynamic it created btwn owner and slave. Not even in fiction does it make sense that the slave owner’s wife learns that her daughter’s intended is “in love” with one of the slaves — her husband’s bastard no less — and responds by threatening the slave to stay away from the intended without any real punishment. An owner also would’ve never gone through the trouble of deception to convince the slave of an untruth. Slaves were PROPERTY and not deemed to be full humans by their owners. This almost tried to portray a “kinder, gentler” form of slavery and there’s no such thing. I know this is fiction but these were 21st century interactions that completely ignored what we know was the reality of slavery and would’ve been better omitted. I understand the intent of the tale but slavery is not something to be dressed up so it’s less distasteful for our modern sensibilities and I think the story would’ve stood well without those ridiculous interactions that were supposed to both remind of us slavery but not be too distracted by the brutality and inhumanity.

LOVED IT!

Normally I hate books that straddle between 1st and 3rd person but I loved every word in this book. The narrators were mostly magnificent! I say mostly bcz our heroine was supposed to be young, I believe in her early 20's...and Virginia sounded a bit drab at times. But for the most part she did a bang up job- especially during the flashbacks in the 1800's. And ZW, I don't think he could ever do anything wrong on a mic. Well...unless maybe he accidentally pooted really loudly and everyone heard it or something stupid like that! But that would never happen. 😂 God I hope no one really reads my reviews past the first sentence or two. Anyway, the book itself was amazing and it's definitely worth a credit but I happened to get it on sale, YAY! ❤️

more than 5 stars!!

I wish I could give this amazing story more than 5 stars! I was pulled in from the start. An amazing story of love, hurt, tragedy, guilt, and so much more. A story that takes place in the past and in the present. Jonah and Clara meet by chance at the wishing wall because of an old legend tale from long ago. Through tragedy and thoughts of low self worth, hope and love blossoms. I am trying so hard to write a review that gives this story the praise it deserves; without giving away any spoilers. That is so hard. So I will just say that I loved this story so much. It is a MUST READ/LISTEN TO in my opinion. Narrators Zachary Webber and Virginia Rose did a superb job giving life to this amazing story. Emotion in all the right spots.

Unexpected and Enchanting Love Story

This is an enchanting love story brilliantly performed. I am so glad I One-clicked this wonderfully written story rich with details, great characters, wonder and wishes fulfilled. This is a long story full of great character development. The Wish Collector is sad, suspenseful, passionate and most of all refreshing. The narrators bring the story of Jonah and Clara to life as you journey toward their HEA.

Endless Love!

Mia Sheridan writes another keeper. About the present day story: Clara was a patient woman. She didn't let Jonah push her away. About The 1861 : Angelina & Charles didn't stand a chance from the start. But I do think that if Angelina's mother issued a curse, it was put on the wrong person (people). I was glad to see that with all the obstacles both couples got their HEA, even if it did take 100+ years for one of them.

Amazing doesn’t even cut it

This was one of the best books I’ve ever read. It is truly a beauty and the beast, but not in the main sense. Jonah is a man so full of self loathing and doubt, but he is such a wonderful character that no matter how many times he says “I can’t” or “no” he finds a way to push himself, all because of Clara. There’s plenty of tears, but also perseverance and hope. You will love every moment of this book and be sad when it’s over. Zachary and Virginia did an amazing job narrating this book. I want to read it again.

Wow!

Why has this story not been made into a film? The two narrators were so good that it felt like I was watching a film thanks to the excellent writing. I do have a crush about Zachary Webber’s voice and he was excellent as usual. His partner narrator was an equal match. Just finished listening and Wow!!!!
