Sheer beauty!

Sheer beauty - in prose, content and of the lessons leant. Macfarlane’s journey of mind, matter and place is a masterpiece. A reminder of the true nature of things.

An appalling narrated book

I’ve now listened to (on Audible) and read the full canon of Macfarlane’s works. He is undoubtedly the best writer on landscapes and the people who live and work on or indeed, deep within them, living today. His prose is poetic; his narration captivating. And his ability to grip his readers into something of the passion he feels for the living world is more than impressive. The narration of his other books are formidable, among the best I’ve come across on Audible, full of depth, tone, accent and clarity of conveyance. It’s like, as I imagine it, to be listening to Macfarlane as he himself is writing the books, lock step into his imagination and recount. But (and it’s a huge ‘but’) this narration by Simon Bubb is appalling: it is boring, monotone, uninspired. It’s like listening to an uninterested school child reading in class. Don’t listen to this book: it will spoil Macfarlane’s brilliance for you. Instead listen to anything else (!) and especially his other books on this platform, Underland and Landmarks in particular.
