About this listen

Exclusive to Audible! Listen to a discussion between the author and the narrator of The Widow at the end of this recording.

We've all seen him: the man - the monster - staring from the front page of every newspaper, accused of a terrible crime.

But what about her: the woman who grips his arm on the courtroom stairs - the wife who stands by him?

Jean Taylor's life was blissfully ordinary. Nice house, nice husband. Glen was all she'd ever wanted: her Prince Charming.

Until he became that man accused, that monster on the front page. Jean was married to a man everyone thought capable of unimaginable evil.

But now Glen is dead, and she's alone for the first time, free to tell her story on her own terms.

Jean Taylor is going to tell us what she knows.

Would you listen to The Widow again? Why?

I would definitely listen to this book again. The narrator really brought the characters to life in such a believable way that you actually forgot the book is only being read by one person, which is exactly what the story needed to bring the multiple perspectives to life.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I really responded to Jeanie simply because she was such a tragic character.

What does Clare Corbett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Clare Corbett is seriously talented. She seemed to embody the characters with the slightest change of her voice, definitely one of the best narrators I've heard so far.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me feel really sad but at the same time it took normal parts of life and examined them, like how we are able to cover concern with niceties. Everything in the character's lives seemed to be somewhat subdued by a cup of tea, which I completely understand.

Totally absorbing

For the first few chapters I had my doubts about this book, with its very naive central character Jean Taylor - I kept wondering how she had managed to stay in the 1950s, mentally, in various ways. I was more interested in other characters such as journalist Kate, and DI Bob Sparks, However, gradually Jean became more interesting, particularly as her potential complicity in her husband's crime was raised. Both of them had the capacity to divide their brains, ie not to let the right brain know what the left brain was doing. Fiona Barton's ability to handle this was the most interesting aspect of the book, perhaps. I found the investigation too detailed in places, getting a bit boring - but could see the point of it, to show how painstaking police and journalistic work needs to be. She has a background in journalism which she has mined to good effect, and does not miss the chance to criticize the media sharply, through the mouths of its subjects.

Engaging detective story
