Story
Dolly Jamieson is not homeless, she's merely between permanent abodes. The 78-year-old spends her days keeping warm at the local library, where she enjoys sparring with the officious head librarian and helping herself to the free morning tea. It's not so bad, really. But it's certainly a far cry from the 1960s, when this humble girl from Geelong became an international star of the stage. As the acclaimed lead in the Broadway production of The Rose of France, all Dolly's dreams had come true. So how, in her old age, did she end up here?

Publisher's Summary
Exclusive to Audible! Listen to a discussion between the author and the narrator of The Widow at the end of this recording.
We've all seen him: the man - the monster - staring from the front page of every newspaper, accused of a terrible crime.
But what about her: the woman who grips his arm on the courtroom stairs - the wife who stands by him?
Jean Taylor's life was blissfully ordinary. Nice house, nice husband. Glen was all she'd ever wanted: her Prince Charming.
Until he became that man accused, that monster on the front page. Jean was married to a man everyone thought capable of unimaginable evil.
But now Glen is dead, and she's alone for the first time, free to tell her story on her own terms.
Jean Taylor is going to tell us what she knows.Critic Reviews

a bit long winded and boring.
the narrator was very good. I struggled with Jean's character; too cliche English dependent housewife. I was disappointed by the lack of suspense , twists and turns. I did not enjoy this novel and don't think it should be classed as a thriller.

Riveting unveiling
Would you consider the audio edition of The Widow to be better than the print version?
I love the audio and the readers voice brought it to life, I reckon they would be on par.
What other book might you compare The Widow to, and why?
Funnily I thought of the Girl on the Train, but probably because of the closeness of the protagonist's voice being so strong and the unravelling of the other characters.
What about Clare Corbett’s performance did you like?
I loved Clare Corbett's performance all the way through and I was totally engaged with each character through her interpretation, she was so good as the widow's voice.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
What secrets does she hold?
Caught in her husbands web..
The traps we find ourself in when we seek a relationships are many more than we realise...
Any additional comments?
The idea of downtrodden yet loyal wife is interesting and nowadays is seen as abusive by some and endured and managed by many - at what point does a woman become true to herself, is she ever able to? This is an aspect I find fascinating to contemplate. A thoughtful read and I reflect on the themes of entrapment that weaves its way through the book that touches each character in some way or another as the entrapped and the entrapper.

Listened to it in one day
Loved this debut novel. Great character development and a slow burn of a story that grips you right from the beginning. Definitely not another 'Gone Girl' and that's a good thing. This book has a real soul and is very different to anything I've read/listened. Can't wait to see what's in store for us by this author in the future!
Clare Corbett's narration is superb just as usual and only adds to the listening experience.

Emotionally gripping
Such a wonderful first book from Fiona Barton - I hope she has another waiting for us! The characters in this book were original and totally believable. It was written from a unique angle in that we heard the story from different characters which somehow made the story deeper and more emotional. Fiona handled the subject of the book tactfully and skilfully with no great insights or descriptions, and for this I applaud her. The plot was a gripping, interesting, insightful psychological thriller. Clare Corbett is, as usual, amazing and it is no wonder she is well respected and in great demand. I would give this book 10 if I could. Just superb.
