Publisher's Summary

They were the men and women of the Royal Navy's Special Operations units. Carrying out lightning raids on hostile coasts, they became a navy within a navy - each handpicked for their individual skills, and all of them courageous. Against the mighty backdrop of World War II they performed their small but deadly operations - living often beyond hope, sometimes beyond mercy. This is the dramatic story of a handful of such people. The Volunteers.

Okay But Not Reeman’s best

I’m a Reeman fan for over 40 years and I sill am. However, his full potential was not reached in this novel.

Honestly disappointing

The story was ok if implausible at times. What bored me to tears was the romance. Flawed. Boy meets boy. Boy dies. Boy meets girl. Girl is former lover of dead boy (how many times have we seen this?) instant love after 1 tea and one meal. Tragedy ensues.

This really was intrusive. Once they got going it consumed the story. I found myself fast forwarding past her white breasts and his angst. I was glad when it ended.

Others said this was Reemans best. I wont be reading any more. Not my cup of warfare tea.

Reeman at his best

A fast moving story of small ships and the men who worked them. Life, death, passion and the grasping of happiness in a world gone mad. Well written and read you feel part of it.

Alastair Maclean it ain't.

A good narration from David Rintoul couldn't save this book from being 1% war story/adventure and 99% Mills & Boon.

Interesting

Narrator excellent but the story and characters didn't hook me in as much as I'd hoped.
