Critic Reviews

"Eugenides' voice is so fresh and compelling, his powers of observation so startling and acute, that most will be mesmerized....This is an auspicious debut from an imaginative and talented writer." ( Publishers Weekly)
"A finely crafted work of literary if slightly macabre imagination....A black, glittering novel that won't be to everyone's taste but must be tried by readers looking for something different." ( Library Journal)
"Mr. Eugenides is blessed with the storyteller's most magical gift, the ability to transform the mundane into the extraordinary." ( The New York Times Book Review)

I listened to Middlesex, which I adored, so now The Virgin Suicides…deeply moving and desperately sad. Great writer, imagine having Eugenides as your professor!!!

Wow what a read. Had I not known it was fiction, I would’ve sworn it was a true story. It’s been a long time since I have read a great piece of writing. Tragic in content, brilliantly bought to life by the narrator. A crucial read if only to get a feeling of what it is like for those left to live with the sadness, grief, guilt, and the unknown that youth suicide leaves in its wake.

Outstanding narration that set the tone for a magnificent book

Highly disturbing but worth it! Amazing writing, it will haunt me forever. I can't get over the sheer torture of these poor girls. So brutal and so tragic.

Masterpiece

Amazing writing. Very dark but it held my attention. It smelt bad but like an episode of hoarders I couldn’t look away.

Slightly racist and possessive but aside from that it was great! Narrator was absolutely brilliant!

And you did this for what? This was all style, no substance — but the narration was great.

For what?

An intriguing story. I found too much waffle about other things other than the sisters story line

I don't know why this was lauded so much. I struggled through, thinking "it was a highly awarded book! Surely it will be better soon!"

Spoiler alert, it was never better.

What a slog
