About this listen

For eight strangers in a Los Angeles hostel, even the other side of the world isn’t far enough. The craving for a new identity and the desire to start again is something they have in common. But they discover that it doesn't matter where you are or who you are - if you can't lay the past to rest, fate and coincidence have a way of catching up with you.

Book was OK. It took far too long in my opinion to get to the core of the book and have things start to get interesting. I’d say you have to be very patient for at LEAST the first 5 hours to fully get into the book. Not one of his greatest compared to the rest.

Side characters were interesting

this story was such a fantastic ride, you get to know each character so well, all with a problematic past and uncertain future and yet all blend together perfectly. narration was also great considering all the different accents. highly recommend.

fantastic characters

I found this book a little convoluted at the start; there are lots of characters and the timeline switches regularly. But persist with it, the author, narrator (and reader/listener!) all get into a groove after a few chapters and it becomes an enjoyable listen.

another great Marrs book

it was very hard to follow in the beginning as there were too many characters and too much going back and forth. Chapters were too short, and there were so many of them. The
ending was OK, but not sure if I would recommend this book to others.

When you are helping manager the International Hostel In California’s colourful Venice Beach, your life is going to be eventful.
When Tommy, a young English backpacker ends up doing shifts at the Venice Beach Hostel, nothing would prepare him for the colourful characters that would be “in residence “ and just passing through .

All take advantage of the cheap accommodation in the run down premises run by the Dubois Ron.
Most are transients, but some are more permanent.
Tommy, himself, is a victim of circumstances, having survived a shooting out the front, he has nowhere to go after separating from his travel buddy, fellow Englishman, Louie.

A job is a job ( with free bed and some good ) until something else comes along .

As he goes about his day , we meet the other residents.

All with their own stories ( which are told in their own chapters ) and their share of secrets.

Sex, drugs, parties, murder.
The international gas it all .

Some interesting, twists.
Some out, in out shocking moments.
Along with some truly heartbreaking ones as the occupants stories unravel.
John Marrs has delivered again with this one.

This story got better and better as time went on with lots of twists and unexpected turns. The last half I ended up binging and look forward to discovering more stories by this author. The narration was fantastic the story fabulous and highly recommended.

I have read and loved a few John Marrs novels. When I saw this was a free audiobook I jumped at the chance to read it. It was so close to being a DNF but I kept at it. It seemed to just drag on. Way too much “filler” for my liking. The intertwined story lines were OK but so long winded. Nothing like the exciting Marrs books I’ve listened to in the past. Please still read his books, maybe just not this one.

Not a typical John Marrs

After a bit of a slow start, the story developed very quickly and continually kept surprising me. The narrator was outstanding!

Expect the unexpected...
