About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Miles from anywhere, the isolated mansion Darracott Place is presided over by the irascible Lord Darracott.

The recent drowning of his eldest son has done nothing to improve his temper. For now he must send for the unknown offspring of the uncle whom the family are never permitted to mention. Yet none of that beleaguered family are prepared for the arrival of the weaver's brat and heir apparent....

Yet again Georgette Heyer shows the qualities that made her one of the most successful and best-loved romantic novelists of her age, and why her popularity endures to this day.

Critic Reviews

"Absolutely delicious tales of Regency heroes.... Utter, immersive escapism." (Sophie Kinsella)

"One of my perennial comfort authors. Heyer's books are as incisively witty and quietly subversive as any of Jane Austen's." (Joanne Harris)

"Heart-stoppingly gorgeous." (Harriet Evans)

"Georgette Heyer is second to none." (Sunday Times)

If you loved Jane Austen and ran out of her books to read, Heyer is a good substitute, or even start with her. She writes in the same humanity loving observational style. Plus she is so subtly funny! I find myself laughing out loud! Her characters are so individual and real. You won't go wrong with this book or most of the many other Heyer novels.

This book was very slow and a bit irritating to start with but warmed up. A good play on characters and a good story.

An enjoyable read

Hugo may be my favourite character Georgette Heyer ever wrote. His wit and pleasantness are endearing. This book has all the fun absurdity and twists you find in lots of Heyers books but I find this story just a little more unhinged than usual- partly due to the fantastic narration.

North and South meets Pride and Prejudice

Sophisticated, compelling, witty and engaging, this masterful classic never fails to enthral. Superbly read, this romantic adventure was as pleasing at age 63 as it was the first time I discovered Georgette Heyer at 13yo. A delightful and timeless classic. Literary genius by a much beloved author.

GOAT Author of Historical Romance

Loved this reading of a favourite GH book. Top marks to the narrator who cleverly brought all the characters to life. It was laugh out loud funny in parts, especially the outbursts by the irascible Lord Darracot.

This rendering of one of my favourite Georgette Heyer novels is excellent. No one knows the times or the language and etiquette of the day better than Heyer and that is precisely why her stories remain fresh and interesting. I should also mention her heroes are always appealing and her heroines, sensible and plucky. Very well narrated. Enjoy!

Still the best of historical romance
