About this listen

Helen Carter has just landed her first case as a detective: a murder in an abandoned cinema. A mysterious clock-like symbol is drawn on the wall...in blood.

Stranger still is what the killer left behind: the business card of an ex-cop.

Since being promoted from WPC, Helen is having trouble making her mark in the male-dominated Edinburgh CID, working under Inspector Jack Craven. He’s not happy about having a woman on his team. Witnesses won’t talk to her; her colleagues don’t take her seriously.

And now a body turns up in a sweet shop with a pocket watch shoved in his mouth.

The clock is ticking to stop a serial killer.

Fans of Ashes to Ashes, Caro Ramsay, Helen H. Durrant, J.D. Kirk, Angela Marsons, Rachel McLean, Val McDermid and Alex Gray will love this retro Scottish crime series set in the 1970s.

Critic Reviews

"A brilliant debut." (Lorraine Mace, author of the DI Sterling thriller series)

The narrator spoke at unnecessary and annoyingly speedy pace throughout the whole narrative. So much so, that when there was a need to build tension it was lost. Even the chapter introductions were read at the same fast pace. Ruined the listening experience.

Was the narrator on a time limit?

I like the story. It was good with twists and turns. I liked the constant guessing. Worthwhile read!

The Story Telling

I approached "The Uniform" with interest, but unfortunately, the pace was slow to develop, and it took a while to capture my attention. The story explores the challenges faced by Helen, a female police officer, in the 1970s. While the themes of misogyny and sexism are timely and thought-provoking, I found the descriptions to be somewhat banal and lacking in depth.

As someone who remembers the 1970s, I can attest that these attitudes were prevalent in many professions, not just the police force. However, I had hoped for a more nuanced and insightful portrayal.

Despite my initial lack of engagement, I persevered and grew to like Helen's character. Her determination and resilience in the face of adversity are admirable, and I'm willing to give the next book in the series a try.
