Publisher's Summary

In hurricane-ravaged Galveston, a storm of betrayal is brewing.

Nineteen-year-old Grace's golden age is just beginning. She and her mother live a privileged life. Beautiful and talented, Grace is looking forward to a pleasant summer celebrating her engagement to a wealthy young gentleman.

But when her lovely, charming, and disgraced cousin Etta arrives, Grace finds her place in society - and in her mother's heart - threatened. Etta enchants everyone as she maneuvers to secure a station in Galveston's upper echelons. Grace, in a reckless moment, reveals Etta's scandalous past, and as punishment, she's sent to work in Galveston's back alleys, helping the poor. There, a silent waif known only as Miss Girl opens Grace's eyes to new love and purpose. She's determined to save this girl who lost her entire family in the hurricane and now slips along the shadows of the unfinished seawall with a mysterious resolve.

Soon, the lives of the three young women will converge as betrayal, mistaken identity, and a family secret that sweeps them toward a future that defies all expectations.

Unsatisfying ending.

Storyline was slow without much happening. The ending was very unsatisfying. Awful to think of a mute 14 year old sailing out to the unknown. She can't speak, has no money or clothes. How would she survive? The horrible rape didn't seem to add anything to the storyline except to emphasize how alone the girl is. I had hoped for a good ending for her, finding her voice, education and Grace with her privileged wealthy life could have taken her in.
Surely Grace would have married the man she loved instead of choosing to stay where her mentally ill father was. He was well cared for in the home and didn't even recognize Grace.

Brave women

This book brought the reality of a long ago tragedy. I was unaware of this tragic hurricane in our history until listening to this story. This book was a great source of insight of what happened that tragic day in 1900 and the effects it had on the people it effected. How I wish so many things could have been different for the young girl it follows, it shadows nothing, only her reality and the reality of another young girl.
This book has stayed with me...making me feel very thankful for what I have and whom I have in my life.

The book that goes no where

I kept waiting for a resolution, it never occurred. Ethereal characters but without substance. Why?

The story of 3 different girls in 1900

This is the story of 3 girls living in the same time in different social sercomtases. It tells of their life paths and how they intersect and effect each other.

No ending.

I was really interested in this book because I have visited Galveston and studied about the hurricane that hit in 1900. The story was a little slow but, good descriptions of what was going on after the hurricane and building the wall. The narrator was ok. It seemed there was a consistent rise and fall with every sentence that got irritating at times. The thing I disliked about this book was the ending. There were 4 main characters and the book ended without ever disclosing what really happened in any of their lives. I was really disappointed!

Very different approach to a hurricane.

The story line was a little had to get into. But once that was set the story was very moving and interesting...I highly recommend this book!

A good story

At first, I thought it was a dual timeline story, but it isn't. I liked the story. The accent the narrator used sounded more Charleston than Texan, but maybe coastal Texans have a different accent than the rest of Texas.
