About this listen

Third time's the charm, right?

At least that's what I tell myself when I witness the same hot guy commit mass murder three times in a few days. I'm either the luckiest mute boy ever or possibly the unluckiest.

Who knows, maybe him kidnapping me will turn into the greatest love story ever told? Hey, it could happen! You never know how these things will turn out. I happen to believe in love and soulmates, and if nothing else, Arlington Fox doesn't treat my disability like a nuisance.

It's not every day you find someone who just gets you, and I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth even if the horse in question is a man so good at killing people that I should probably introspect a bit about why that skews my moral compass and possibly my kinks. But c'mon, competence is sexy, am I right?

The Trouble with Trying to Date a Murderer is an MM paranormal romance with lots of sass, humor, a ridiculous 3000-year age gap, and an inordinate number of tables.

Includes a bonus short story, "Fox Recruits a Mute Boy (and Falls in Love)."

Mute 23 yo Romily Butcher has witnessed more than his fair share of mass murder, so much so that he’s not phased by what he witnesses. But now he can’t seem to go out in public without being caught up in another murder spree, all centring around assassin Arlington Fox. Each spree seems coordinated: as soon as Fox shows up, multiple people just start shooting or drawing knives or swords. And each spree ends with an uninjured Fox surrounded by dead bodies. After the unemployed Romily witnesses a few of these incidents, he learns that Fox is a Reaper and Fox offers him the job of being his Harbinger: the herald whose presence announces a reaping by Fox will occur. Amongst all the magic and mayhem, Romily knows that one single thing: he’s determined to marry Fox one day.

I didn’t know what to expect from this zany John Wick-like romance, but it was a lot of fun. Jennifer Cody has created a great character in Romily—he’s a very charismatic person who is cheeky and full of fun. He has adapted well to being mute and he narrates the entire story from his POV. As such, you get to know him extremely well, while Fox is much more of a dashing, heroic, mystery figure. I liked the urban-fantasy world the author has created and I appreciated the slow trickle of world-building, it was complex but well managed. It might be me, but there are a lot of characters and two have quite similar names, all of which can make a confusing muddle for audio listeners. It was the only fly in my otherwise delicious, entertaining soup and I’ll definitely be back for more. 🎧 Kevin Earlywine was born to narrate this series, he does a really superb of job of inhabiting Romily and his cynical humour!

An instant zany favourite!

I love the premise, the story, and the narration. Definitely worth the money!! I like reading it in kindle but the audible version lifts it to a 5 out of 5 !!

Really funny and brilliantly original

This is well worth a listen. The story is funny and original with interesting and memorable characters. I found the narrator to have a very unique voice and style. I think for me his performance worked well with the quirky story.

Fun original story

This is a beloved series. Unfortunately the narrator did not have the voice range & training to distinguish individual characters. Fox & his parents’ voices blended together. I was frequently confused who was speaking. Fox sounded like a twenty-something; Romilly though was on-point. Bellamy & Darcy sounded too alike. Narrator always speaks with the same cadence & ends on a strange lilting tone.

I was greatly disappointed as I had been looking forward to the series getting on audio. Despite the short length, it took me a week to finish listening as I just couldn’t get into it. I have read this series several times as I love it. But sadly I will not be able to enjoy future audios of this series.

Fantastic series
