I swear I didn’t mean to bind my secret high school crush to me, it just happened.

I made a promise to my family that there would be no spell casting while they were away. It was well known in the Turner household that my spells tended to go a bit, shall we say, wonky. Like turning my ex-boyfriend into a frog when I’d been trying to conjure breakfast in bed. Complete accident, though my sister claimed he was better in frog form. She wasn’t wrong. So, for the next two weeks I would look after our family store, hang out with my cat, Hex, and enjoy having the house to myself for once. Peace and quiet and no hinky spell work business.

Then he blew into my store–literally. Michael Endicott the third. Or fourth? Maybe fifth? It didn’t matter. What did matter was that I was staring at my high school crush–who clearly did not remember me. Unfortunately, he still made me forget how to form words into a complete sentence. Seems a vengeful one-night stand had placed a bad luck spell on Michael, and he needed help. My help. I mean, what could go wrong? It was just an easy reversal spell. No problem. Only somehow instead of reversing the spell, I managed to bind us together.

The Trouble With Spells is an MM paranormal romance between Callum, a witch vexed with wonky magic and Michael, a nonbeliever human. Tropes include opposites attract, forced proximity, only one bed, tarot card readings, and an obligatory black cat.

Please note this was originally published as part of the Cauldrons & Kisses collaboration and no content has been changed from the original story.

TW & CW’s: While this book is mostly light and fluffy, it does contain brief instances that might be triggering to a listener. A severe allergic reaction resulting in a brief hospital stay, car accident, kidnapping, attempted murder and discussion of murder things.

Boston prosecutor Michael Endicott III lives a charmed life. He’s wealthy, he’s handsome, he’s charismatic, and he hasn’t lost a single case in a year. At least he hadn’t lost a case until the day after an angry one-night stand curses him and he loses all his scheduled cases. And there’s suddenly a lot of bad luck. Desperate and placed on leave, he visits his home town of Salem and consults one of the many shops selling potions and spells. Callum is that rare male witch in a household of talented female witches. Unfortunately, they’re all on a retreat and while Callum is great at reading auras and fortunes, he’s never cast a spell successfully. Callum can’t believe his high school crush is in his store and his eagerness to help just makes everything worse. Now Michael and Callum must spend every minute together or Michael gets blinding headaches. But could this be a blessing in disguise for both men?

Gosh, this was a fun and cute supernatural romance! Michael is (understandably) a bit arrogant and his run of cursed luck helps him reevaluate how he treats people. Meanwhile, Callum is a loveable klutz who deserves his HEA. I also enjoyed the subplot involving one of Michael’s cases, but most of all, it was just lovely watching Michael and Callum fall in love. I’m so hoping there’ll be more in this series! 🎧 Voice actor Lamont Ridgell was delightful to listen to—he imbued the story with such a sense of fun. This is a first-person narrative switching between Callum and Michael’s POVs and Lamont especially suited the character of Callum.

Fun and oh so sweet!
