Story
Gemma Guillory has lived in Rainier her entire life. She knows the tiny town's ins and outs like the back of her hand, the people like they are her family, their quirks as if they were her own. She knows her once-charming town is now remembered for one reason, and one reason only. That three innocent people died. That the last stop on the Rainier Ripper's trail of death seventeen years ago was her innocuous little teashop. She knows that the consequences of catching the Ripper still haunt her police officer husband and their marriage to this day and that some of her neighbours are desperate.

Story
The body of a local teenage boy is found on the beach of a sleepy northern New South Wales town. David went for an evening swim and got into trouble . . . at least, that's what it looks like. Three weeks before, Leila, a young backpacker, didn't turn up for her shift at the local cafe. Benny, the owner, isn't worried. It happens—backpackers are always on the move. There'll be another one.

Story
The small town of Nannine lies in the harsh red interior of New South Wales. Once a thriving outback centre, years of punishing drought have whittled it down to no more than a couple of pubs and a police station. And its one sinister claim to fame: the still-unsolved disappearance of Evelyn McCreery 19 years ago from the bedroom she shared with her twin sister. Mina McCreery's life has been defined by the intense and ongoing public interest in her sister's case. Now an anxious and reclusive adult, Mina lives alone on her family's sunbaked destocked sheep farm.

Publisher's Summary
A loving husband lost to devastating summer floods. A teenage girl injured during a robbery. Two seemingly unconnected cases that will push a detective to the brink.
An atmospheric, compelling new voice in Australian crime fiction.
'Such a good read' Val McDermid
In Northern New South Wales, heavily pregnant and a week away from maternity leave, Detective Sergeant Kate Miles is exhausted and counting down the days. But a violent hold-up at a local fast-food restaurant with unsettling connections to her own past, means that her final days will be anything but straightforward.
When a second case is dumped on her lap, the closed case of a man drowned in recent summer floods, what begins as a simple informal review quickly grows into something more complicated. Kate can either write the report that's expected of her or investigate the case the way she wants to.
As secrets and betrayals pile up, and the needs of her own family intervene, how far is Kate prepared to push to discover the truth?

Good story, definitely worth a listen
I enjoyed this and would have liked to give it a five star review but I found the start and middle of the story to be just a little slow moving. I understand the author was wanting to build suspense whilst laying down the background to the plot but somehow it just dragged a little. Don't let my criticism put you off because the ending was good and all loose threads neatly tied up. I will be watching for the next work by this author and look forward to it.

interesting plot. Would have preferred a more mature, practised voice for this book. So many phrasing errors were irritating and distracting. Maybe the writing style was not so great for reading aloud in places...

What a brilliant story
We listened to The Torrent on a recent road trip in Australia. Suffice to say, we couldn't stop listening and even bypassed some potential stops because we'd rather drive and listen than pull over! Dinuka McKenzie has a gift for writing and her work goes way beyond that of a debut novelist. Each character was so real and tangible, the storyline complex and satisfying, and the case not resolved 'til almost the last page. We can't wait to listen to any future works that McKenzie writes. She has a special talent as an Australian writer.

Captivating & Nuanced
One of the things I liked best about this novel is McKenzie’s detailed & nuanced writing of the internal dialog of protagonist Kate, particularly regarding her police work & the subtle (& not so subtle) racism & sexism she faces everyday. Also reflected in her thoughts about parenting, relationships & interviewing people as part of her police work.
I really enjoyed the plot & found the mystery compelling &, considering the flooding in NSW & Queensland right now, unnervingly timely.
