About this listen

What was it actually like to live in Elizabethan England? If you could travel to the past and walk the streets of London in the 1590s, where would you stay? What would you eat? What would you wear? Would you really have a sense of it being a glorious age? And if so, how would that glory sit alongside the vagrants, diseases, violence, sexism and famine of the time? In this book Ian Mortimer answers the key questions that a visitor to late 16th-century England would ask.

Overall a wonderful book. Ian manages to make history so interesting. Some bits that weren’t my interest area dragged a bit, but I kept listening and was happy I did because it was so fascinating. Reading the book really helped me have gratitude for our current time amidst the current stream of negativity in the popular media.

I loved the narrator and also loved hearing the author’s real voice in the interview at the end- I did a history degree and was asked the question Ian was asked “what are you going to do with that?”.

Read this and you will think 2020 is excellent

I learned so much as I travelled from village to city, tavern to palace and meeting cesspit cleaners and a queen . Wonderful narrator/tour guide who brought the time and people to life.

Loved the journey

I already have the physical copy of this book, which I absolutely loved; but having it narrated to me was a real treat!
Once again Mortimer provides a fascinating, entertaining and thoroughly researched book. This follows on perfectly from his Medieval Time Traveller's Guide.

Even better the second time!
