She keeps everyone's secrets, until there's a murder...

Sydney, 1965: After a chance encounter with a stranger, mild-mannered tea lady Hazel Bates becomes an accidental sleuth, stumbling into a world of ruthless crooks and racketeers in search of a young woman she believes to be in danger.

In the meantime, Hazel's job at Empire Fashionwear is in jeopardy. The firm has turned out the same frocks and blouses for the past twenty years and when the mini-skirt bursts onto the scene, it rocks the rag trade to its foundations. War breaks out between departments and it falls to Hazel, the quiet diplomat, to broker peace and save the firm.

When there is a murder in the building, Hazel and her network of tea ladies put themselves in danger as they piece together clues that connect the murder to a nearby arson and a kidnapping. But if there's one thing tea ladies can handle, it's hot water.©2023 Amanda Hampson (P)2023 Penguin Random House Australia Audio

It was a trip down memory lane as I was born in 1948, mother was an at-home dressmaker, and my daughter is still working at Arnott's after 30 years. loved the mystery and descriptions and look forward to the next book

Loved visiting 1960's Sydney. Several mysteries in one book - good bang for your buck! Fun characters and the narrators performance was the brilliant.

I absolutely loved listening to this book on my walks. It was so well read and I just fell in love with Hazel. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep it interesting, lots of laughs and tender moments. An absolute treat.

So enjoyable

Look, it’s not high art. But it is an enjoyable romp with unlikely heroes. Narration is pretty good, some of the voices adopted are a bit grating, but otherwise fine. The side plot (no spoilers) sort of peters out, but otherwise I enjoyed this one.

Enjoyable romp
