Publisher's Summary

Enter autophagy, an ancient mechanism built into our cells that eliminates toxic materials, initiates fat-burning, and protects cells against stress. Best known for being triggered by intermittent fasting, the complex process not only slows down the ageing process but optimises biological function as a whole, staving off all manner of disease - from diabetes to dementia - and affording us the healthy lifespan we never thought possible.

So how can we activate autophagy? It’s as simple as flipping a switch. The Switch unpacks the revolutionary research on the body's natural process for maintaining health and youthfulness as well as the 'dial' that controls it. Backed by a synthesis of the data, and with a foreword by renowned Harvard geneticists Drs. George Church and David Sinclair, The Switch not only decodes the science of autophagy but also teaches listeners how to control it and benefit from its profound impact.

too much science

good book for health professionals and those who grasp science. I feel this book left the lay person behind. not enough practical day to day info for me. narrator did a good job.

Should have been called the turn off

Unfortunately this is more a lesson in Evolution than any diet help. He waffles on so much that you are waiting till the end of the book for the point to be made and then it still doesn't happen. Very disappointing.

Interesting

Well researched and the author is clearly passionate about this method, though a great deal of his ideas are not for me.

I enjoy reading these types of books as I enjoy a healthy lifestyle. This is more a guide to keep fresh and get some new ideas. Some worthwhile and interesting points are made, others not so much.

Worthwhile read/listen.

What an insightful look at nutrition and health

James really nails the topic of autophagy and its importance to health and lifespan. He does such a great job at explaining why diet strategies work and when, and for how long, they can be used to target a planned schedule of states in the body to gain the most benefit from the nutritional intake of each.

Some great info

Basically all the info on intermittent fasting repeated. If you are looking for a program this is great but if you are looking for an entertaining way to educate yourself on this subject, this is a little boring.

Great

Fascinating synthesis of research around dietary factors for aging and disease. Even if you don't take it all in and find yourself losing concentration occasionally (not gonna lie, that's me), you'll still walk away from this audiobook having opened a door in your knowledge that questions and information will pour through. If Clement's hypothesis is correct, this line of research and its practical consequences to health are extremely important and could be life-changing.

Useful points on fasting and cell biochemistry

As a chemist, enjoyed listening to this book. first few chapters feel like a simplified brief review of cell biochemistry.
I also liked the statistics, maths, and other information on the mechanisms of some of the reactions in living cells.
Narrator voice is clear and pronounciation of technical terms and biomolecule names is fantastic.

TLDR: eat pescatarian/vegan/keto to live forever

unconvinced of the credentials of the author, and found contradictory info throughout where he tries to figure out what naturally long lived populations do and eat but also try to "hack" autophagy short cuts (long living Cretians that drank red wine regularly, but alcohol is only permitted once a month on the plan. Sardinians/Okinawans that eat a fairly high carb diet but not allowed carbs on this plan).
Ignores using well known populations that already fast and eat low protein diets (many Muslim populations are vegetarian but still have issues with diabetes, cancer etc) but don't live long, and instead uses weird comparisons, such as a long living whale to illustrate the benefits of eating omega 3...

There's prob a lot that is good for you here (won't argue that a diet high in veggies and fish with exercise is great), and I'm sure intermittent fasting had benefits, but it largely ignores human behaviour and what is sustainable, and only devotes about two pages to the "diet" (less than is devoted to talking about the author, how he's "read" a lot about this, was early to map his own genome - so what? - and therefore we should ignore the lack of doctorate) - and this dietary approach is a long list of what not to do or eat (no grains, no sugars, no alcohol, very little animal protein, very low carb), with very little on the "permitted" list (green veggies, omega 3 and macadamia nuts apparently).

Not one of the better books on health I've read - instead would recommend "Why we eat (too much)"
