Publisher's Summary

Rowena Tipton isn't looking for a new life, just a new adventure, something to while away the months as her long-term boyfriend presses pause on their relationship before they become engaged. But when a chance encounter at a New York wedding leads to an audition for a coveted house share in The Hamptons - Manhattan's elite beach scene - suddenly a new life is exactly what she's got.

Stretching before her is a summer with three eclectic housemates, long days on white-sand ocean beaches and parties on gilded tennis courts. But high rewards bring high stakes, and Rowena soon finds herself caught in the crossfire of a vicious intimidation campaign. Alone for the first time in her adult life, she has no one to turn to but a stranger who is everything she doesn't want - but possibly everything she needs.

The Summer Without You is a gorgeously escapist summer listen from the Sunday Times best-selling author of Christmas at Tiffany's, Karen Swan.

Entertaining

I didn't think I was going to be able to make it through the book in the first couple of chapters the narrators accents for a couple of the characters really grated on me to the point I thought I would have to give up, however I managed to get past the Brooklyn accent and enjoyed the book a lot. Found the ending a bit rushed, but overall loved driving to work each day listening to the story.

Great listen, loved it

Wasn't sure at the beginning but this is a book with really good development. I couldn't wait for the ending and yet I never wanted the summer to end. This was a great listen any time of the year but I really funny intriguing , my only complaint is loud Bobby. This is a great group of characters, set in an awesome summer place with great twists and turns. Highly recommend.

Vision for the future is interrupted

Basically, guy says "let's put this whole thing on hold for 6 months and then pick up where we left off!". He's a fool, she's heartbroken. She gets a chance to work in the US in the Hamptons for the summer. It takes awhile, but she comes into her own. The guy returns after 6 months and there you are - what will she do? The book is rather long, nearly 17 hours. Much of it is spent on her depression and loss of her perfectly planned future. You read about her slow but incremental growth and see a glimmer of hope for her. Bottom line - your future is never quite what you planned it to be. Narrator Katie Scarfe was very good. Male, female voices, as well as British and American accents were handled well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story!

Great story, easy listening, I didn’t want it to end. Some of the voices were a bit annoying but the storyline made it easy to look past them.

A wonderful Summer

The first Karen Swan book I have listened to and it will not be the last! Twists and turns and beautifully narrated. It's always good to discover a new writer and narrator.

Lovely summer listen

This was a lovely easy story. Perfect for relaxing too. A bit of a thriller to balance out the romantic plot lines. Very well read, with good differing accents/voice for various characters.
Charming book and I loved all the main characters.

Disappointed when a female author writes such a weak female character

I’ve really enjoyed some other Karen Swan books but gave up on this one very early on. The main character was so annoyingly weak that I found myself groaning out loud to her reactions. And as far as I can tell, one of the pivotal scenes (spoiler alert) is when she’s asked to delete some photos of children on the beach by their father. Her indignance was totally OTT and being a pro photographer it didn’t make sense that she was so angry with him-surely she’d know she can’t do that? And her total dependence on her boyfriend was grating (wearing only his clothes for weeks-pleeeeze) and made me hope he’d find someone else!

Hard to warm to...

I found the story hard to get going, overuse of simile and metaphor and a difficulty warming/getting to know the characters. The plot wasn’t engaging and lacked fluidity. First of this author’s books I haven’t been impressed by. Sorry!

Ok

Enjoyed reading this much more than listening to it. Wasn't keen on the voice of the narrator.

Great plot will keep you listening

This was my first Karen Swann book & it won't be the last. The plot is both a little predictable but with unexpected twists thrown in, which makes this book stand out from your typical beach read. The narration also needs commending (for those of you whom narration is a deal breaker- worry not!)

Easy listen

An enjoyable easy listen. Although I’d worked out some of the plot, there were still a few surprises. Not my usual choice but I’d recommend for those who want to listen to a book that needs minimal concentration.
