Publisher's Summary

Six years ago, Eoin "Striker" MacLean endured the greatest betrayal of his life, a disaster that led Robert the Bruce to a crushing defeat and left Eoin without the spirited woman who ruled his heart. Eoin knew that falling in love with Margaret MacDowell - his sworn enemy's daughter - was risky. He promised Bruce that he would keep his fiery bride in the dark about the elite Highland Guard, but he could not predict the dire consequences his secret would have on his young marriage. Nor could he foresee how surrendering to temptation would cripple Bruce's cause, forcing Eoin to blame his wife and himself for trusting her.

Now, as Bruce prepares to challenge the resistance's remaining strongholds, Eoin finally has his chance for revenge against the woman he once loved so fiercely and her entire clan. But when ferociously independent Margaret reveals a surprise that unites her with Eoin, neither of them will let their love go down without a fight. Contains mature themes.

Excellent story

I loved listening to this story. Lots of twists and turns in the plot. Anthony does an excellent job of narration, especially the Scottish brogues. I hope audible makes other titles in this series available.

The story is great the narrating less so.

Mr Ferguson's scot dude voices are fine.

the main character voice in this, Margaret he does so poorly it is truly heinous. he does Margaret a disservice as a character.

reading the eBook Margaret is a strong woman who really does repent for all past mistakes and is a competent and wise woman born, sadly out of her own choices.

spoiler alert

eoin and Margaret meet when she is 18 and he is 24. her mother is long dead and she has successfully been running her father's castle for several years. she is competent at many unladylike tasks and due to her many brothers, is a bit loud and uncouth.

eoin is proper and used to being in control. almost betrothed to an excellent woman he feels nothing for, he meets wild Maggie and falls for her.

they marry in secret and she is taken to his families enormous disapproval to eoins fathers castle. he leaves her for work the first week they arrive and comes back after five months. ... for a night. then leaves again, and Margaret is left in a castle where eoins family and clan hate her as shes now an evil McDougal and her clan is fighting against eoins.

he's torn, shes torn, she takes off, he finds her and she lets one secret slip.

7ish years later after thinking eoin dead, he returns to the bitch he feels betrayed him to murder her family as vengeance for the king, only, surprise, he left a little present in her womb last time he was in town and now has a five year old he knew nothing about.

eoin, so used to thinking of his hated and reviled ex wife as evil incarnate, he has to face his own demons and hers.

I really loved this book in the series. got a better look into the serious warrior in the highland guard. looking up past books for mentions of him, you get to see how he lived during their time apart.

does the past/present thing with much less annoyance than usual.

sex scenes are the usual in this series. not too much, but eoin and Maggie are practical people and so the will they won't they for most of the book isnt there. they get right down to it.

The Striker

What did you love best about The Striker?

This wasn't my favorite out of Monica McCarty's Highland Guard Series. There was just too much back and forth in the relationship of Eoin MacLean and Margaret MacDowell. Everytime Eoin told Margarette not to do something she went right ahead and did it and most of the time which ended up in a mess or death. Even thought her father treated her badly she kept running back to him and her family. Eoin or Margaret couldn't make up their mind about their relationship except to jump into bed every time they saw each other.

Would you recommend The Striker to your friends? Why or why not?

No. There are too many other highland books that are better. I almost didn't finish this book because it was just too frustrating. I have read all the books in their series and this is my least favorite.

Have you listened to any of Antony Ferguson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

He did a really good job and I enjoyed listening to his narration. He changed characters very well.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The extreme reaction was that I was so frustrated with the H&H and their back and forth relationship I almost didn't finish it.

Any additional comments?

There are two more books in this series I will probably "read" just because I've read all their others. I do want to see how this all ties together. I'm hoping that The Rock and The Ghost will be a great finish to this series.

Traitor?

Eoin "Striker" MacLean and Margaret MacDowell. He is the solemn strategist, she is a spirited red head, but when they meet sparks fly. Until Eoin finds out that Maggie is the daughter of his enemy. Does that matter when feelings run this deep. It is a long journey for this couple, but through it all love will find a way.

AWESOME book!

It had been a while since I ventured into this series, and oh, how I missed it! I ADORED this story, and I've always wondered about the mysterious Striker, so I was excited about this story. It certainly didn't disappoint. This was a fabulous book and I can't wait to check out the next one! Antony was a new narrator for me, and I wasn't sure about his voice at first, but I really liked his voice, and his accents. I can't wait to hear the next story! The one crit I have is that Eoin is supposed to be pronounced "Owen" and Antony called him Iain for the whole book, so that was a tad icky, but I got used to it.

So Much Better Than Arrow

I like the way the story starts off in the present. It makes it more intriguing. The relationship with Eoin and Margaret was smoldering hot, but along with that, a ruff marriage. If you ever had a child that didn't listen, they can grow up being the same way. So Margaret's character was no surprise. This story is about loyalty and the lack of it. It is well written, has more substance, and holds your interest. I recommend it.

Monica Doesn't Disapoint

What made the experience of listening to The Striker the most enjoyable?

Antony Ferguson is one of my favorite narrators. He does each character so well!

What other book might you compare The Striker to and why?

all of Monica McCarty's Highland Guard books are incredible. I can't stop buying them! No regrets for any of them!

What does Antony Ferguson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His brogue. As well as the voices of all the different characters were so different yet planned out.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I was supposed to be doing laundry when I read the book and couldn't put it down. But the audio version was a "block out my entire day while i listen to this" sort.

The Striker

This is absolutely my favorite in the series! I have listened to it more than 5 times. Maggie is one of my favorite female characters. She's outspoken, witty and more than a match for Striker!

I loved this recording!

I usually struggle with fiction audio books as I can find myself easily distracted and then realise that I have missed great chunks of the story. Here though I found myself listening nearly non stop. Anthony Ferguson did a fabulous job. He spoke clearly and at a good pace. The voice as narrator was different to the character voices. His voice for Eoin was spot on for me and really helped to bring Eoin to life. Admittedly I was slightly taken aback when I first heard him voice Margaret (heroine) but this quickly faded as the story took over. I have read a number of Monica McCarty's books, which helped with following the plot and keeping track of characters. This book features towards the end of her Highland Guard series and has a fairly involved plot. Characters from previous novels also appear. While it can probably be enjoyed as a standalone, I would recommend reading in order to get the most out of this series. ( incidentally - why aren't the previous books available in audio book format???)
