Publisher's Summary

A dark story has been brought to terrifying life. Can the ending be rewritten in time?

A gripping contemporary Gothic thriller from the best-selling author of the Dr Ruth Galloway mysteries: Susan Hill meets Gone Girl and Disclaimer.

Clare Cassidy is no stranger to tales of murder. As a literature teacher specialising in the Gothic writer R. M. Holland, she teaches a short course on them every year. Then Clare's life and work collide tragically when one of her colleagues is found dead, a line from an R. M. Holland story by her body. The investigating police detective is convinced the writer's works somehow hold the key to the case.

Not knowing whom to trust, and afraid that the killer is someone she knows, Clare confides her darkest suspicions and fears about the case to her journal. Then one day she notices some other writing in the diary. Writing that isn't hers....

Critic Reviews

"Compelling, intelligent and increasingly mesmerising." (Peter James)

"At once a homage to the Gothic thriller, and a re-imagining, it is goose-bump spooky, smart, and haunting, in every sense. I loved this book! And you will too." (Louise Penny)

A great read

I'm a fan of the Ruth Galloway series but I really enjoyed the different direction that this book took. The literary & gothic elements were effective and enjoyable. The varied PoV was refreshing and engaging.

Good but not as expected from synopsis

Enjoyed the story overall but not really what I expected so just a little disappointed in a way I can't go into without a spoiler. Very satisfying with an unexpected twist nonetheless.

Not For Me

Is it wrong to say I was hoping sanctimonious, snobby, prissy Clare would be next on the murderer's list...?

Never ending

This book just dragged on and on and on. Characters boring and hardly thrilling as some readers have said. I think they must have read s different book. I thought it was never going to end. If you are an insomniac then this book Is worth a go.

Tedious twaddle

Struggled to get to the end of this book...started with promise and staggered on into tedium.

Elly does it again

I was hesitant as this is the first book that isnt part of the Bones series. But incredible- the author has such a talent for writing people in such a natural way. I got the twist early on but that didnt stop me enjoying it at all! Loved it

tedious

One of the worst audio books I've struggled with. So much ...she said......he said. ...she said....she said and descriptions were appalling.

Ellie Griffiths just get better and better

I loved this book. It was captivating and gripping from beginning to end. In old-fashioned parlance a real page turner.

The conceit of the book is creative and unusual. Ellie Griffiths uses the literary device of telling the story from different perspectives as the listener travels through the journey of the story with overlapping narrations from different characters. This style keeps the plot twisting and turning as the suspense gradually mounts drawing the listening in.

I live along south coast and really enjoyed the whole story being set in areas that I know. It all added to the realism of the tale.

Having different narrators also kept the listener’ s interest and it made it more like a dramatise play.

I have read all of Ellie Griffiths books and enjoyed each one of them and I’m always on the lookout for a new book being released. This one really is the best she has written yet.

I thoroughly recommend it and am now waiting for the next new book.
