About this listen

An evocative and charming novel full of secrets and mystery, from the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Lost Bookshop

In a quiet village in Ireland, a mysterious local myth is about to change everything…

One hundred years ago, Anna, a young farm girl, volunteers to help an intriguing American visitor translate fairy stories from Irish to English. But all is not as it seems and Anna soon finds herself at the heart of a mystery that threatens her very way of life.

In New York in the present day, Sarah Harper boards a plane bound for the West Coast of Ireland. But once there, she finds she has unearthed dark secrets – secrets that tread the line between the everyday and the otherworldly, the seen and the unseen.

With a taste for the magical in everyday life, Evie Woods's latest novel is full of ordinary characters with extraordinary tales to tell.

Editorial Review

Get a divorce, jump on a plane, and find out if faeries are real
I’m so glad I took the recommendation of a trusted colleague (thanks, Katie O.!) and gave The Story Collector by Evie Woods a chance. Woods is a new-to-me author and Heather O’Sullivan is a new-to-me narrator—and their collaboration has become the summer listen I didn’t know I needed. Blending the past and present, the US and Ireland, the ordinary and the not-so-ordinary—it’s a tale about everyday people that’s full of magic, faeries, love, hope, and the power of stories. You will want to jump on the next Aer Lingus plane you see—you’ll know it by the shamrock on its tail—in hopes of discovering your own magical reawakening. — Tricia F., Audible Editor

What a wonderful journey

This book held my attention. It was very well constructed and had you constantly wanting to get back to it. I had to wait a week before listening to the last hour or so - I was itching to hear how it ended. It was not what I was expecting, lots of little surprises, and I certainly wasn't expecting to be hearing about Irish faeries. It was cleverly woven together and you couldn't help but relate to the characters and their issues. You even get up close and personal with naked evil for a few moments - so well done!

Engaging

I had this on pre-order the moment I finished listening to The Lost Bookshop and I found it exactly as good as I hoped. I enjoy the multiple timelines playing out. The story is easy to follow without being overly cliched and I couldn’t predict every outcome.
I absolutely adore the narrator’s voice.

The Story Collector by Evie Woods is pure enchantment. Evie has a remarkable gift for weaving everyday life with a touch of magic, creating a world that feels both real and wonderfully other-worldly.

I first discovered her through The Lost Bookshop and immediately fell in love with her lyrical style and talent for storytelling. The Story Collector captures that same warmth and wonder—each page feels like a gentle escape and a reminder that magic can be found in the smallest moments.

Highly recommend to anyone who loves beautifully written, heart-stirring fiction with just the right sprinkle of mystery and whimsy. Evie Woods is an author whose books you’ll want to keep close and share with friends.

I think for the most part I liked this book? Yes that question mark is necessary. I'm not really sure how I feel. I know the last couple chapters felt a bit rushed. And the jump in relationship between Sarah and Orin was a bit jarring and didn't really feel earned to me. And as a hopeless romantic I was a bit put out by the ending to Anna's story.

Not my favourite Evie Woods book, but not bad either.

Pretty good, but lacked something

Didn’t see the end coming. But Anna and Sarah’s stories were great. Read also via kindle. You will really enjoy this book.

Unexpected but a great read
